squeaking noise while towing

I have noticed a squeaking noise that sounds as though it may be coming from the hitch while I am towing. It is most noicable when the road surface is poor.

I have not got a stabiliser. Could it be that the towball needs greasing?

Hi, Catherine,

As you seem to have the bog standard connecting head, get your mirror out and use it to look up the interior. You may need a torch to enable you to see clearly. You are looking for any rust or sharp edges to the metal parts. Clean off any old grease that may be there using a rag soaked in white spirit. Dry off the interior with a clean rag then run your finger over the interior surface feeling for any snags or rough patches. If there are any, smooth down with wet-or-dry paper. Finally coat the surface with a thin layer of grease. Clean the towball the same way and grease. That should clear the noise.

Thanks Mick, I'll try that before we use the van again.

I would also have a look at your towbar mountings, just to see if you have any loose or missing nuts, you may frown at this but I was in our local dealer one evening as someone came to collect their brand new van, when they took the towball cap off the newly fitted towbar dropped to the floor!!

But then you might have mice in the boot
