Squeeling Breaks

Hi All, I have done a few miles now towing the new cravan, to and from the dealer a couple of times.

Every time i have towed it I get terrible squeeling from the breaks. (Im not sure if its from the caravan or the car) I get no sound what so ever when i drive the car solo, the breaks are still the ones that were factory fitted on the car and its only done about 18k miles so plenty of wear still left on them. The van is brand new so therefor assume the breaks are too.

Any thoughts?

We head out on our maiden voyage next weekend to devon. Just wondered if any had any views of this is normal before we set out. Has anyone experienced this?

Thanks again all.

Possibly brake dust in drum. Possibly oil or grease contamination in drum. Take the drums off and have a look.

How can you tell the difference between the breaks and the stabiliser? Im brand new to towing so this is all new.

As soon as i touch the breaks, it squeels and it all different pitches. Ive had squeaky breaks on old cars but not heard anything like this. Problem is i cant tell what direction its coming from. The alko stabiliser light is green so am assuming thats working ok?

You can tell the difference as if it is the hitch it will only make a noise when turning , especially at low speed.
If as you say it is when you brake, then it is one or both wheels of the van.

Causes, on a new van maybe just the shoes wearing in, or if you have done a lot of heavy braking it could be dust in the brake drums, however, removing the drums to clean them will require new one shot hub nuts and a torque wrench capable of 290Nm to refit the drums.

I will run it back to the dealer on monday and get it looked at. I don't want a 500 mile round trip next weekend if there is anything remotely wrong with the breaks!

Would they really squeel if they're were being bedded in? Obviously I am a complete newbie to this but I have never had squeaks on new breaks on a car, only when they are worn :). Thanks again for you help,

Yes it is possible new brakes will squeal while the drums take the high spots off the linings . Im pretty sure that it will be that or even as Damian said could be dust in the drums but do take noet if you take the drums off yourself the nut holding the drum on must be replaced with a new nut or two nuts or even 4 if its a twin axle
Sir Roger .PS While its squeaking you know its working . Worry when it stops squeaking :)

I agree that the noise is probably dust or just new brakes but I guess it could be a worry and you should not have to do that yourself to cure it. I would have a word with the dealers, but I do not know if they will be interested, on the basis that if it is just the brakes bedding in they would not need to cure the problem as it will cure itself.

If as the poster says, it's a new van it would be best that he didn't start removing brake drums or anything else for that matter. Doing so gives the dealer/manufacturer a loophole to invalidate the warranty. If it's the van's brakes that squealing, it's up to the dealer to right it. Don't be put off with fairy stories. It isn't normal for new brakes to squeal. Ask the dealer to tow your van around his compound with his vehicle so you can hear.

Why have you towed back and forth to the supplying dealer several times?
but have not towed it on a trip yet.

I don't get what you are saying............

You say it is a new caravan and the brakes have squealed since you have had it.
Why did you not report this on your first visit back to your dealer?
They are far better placed than anyone on this forum to give a diagnosis.

As Jaydug says........it is not normal for brakes to squeal.

First trip was collecting it, I heard a bit of squeeking on the way way back, but didn't thin much of it. I had to take it back in on Friday as I couldn't get water pressure from the shower. They sorted that out. Again a few squeals on the way there but didn't think anything of it as it was really quiet and with the stereo in the car, points I c0uldnt hear it. On the way back back I had the windows down in the car, it was then the penny dropped. I had no idea how well the noise insulation is on the jaguar!
