Help

I am new to caravanning and I am having trouble with my bulldog

stabiliser. When i slow and turn it makes anawful creaking noise and

groans, which causes onlookers to stop and ask what on earth is that

noise.

Could anyone suggest what I am doing wrong that is causing this noise?

thanks

I used to have the same stabiliser and when it creaks like that it needs servicing. Our local towbar fitter did ours but you can do it yourself. The unit needs to be taken apart and have all the dust from the pads removed and the pads inspected as they do crack or break. They then need putting back together after checking the cup washer and it is very important to set the torque of the nut correctly. This will make it much quieter and it should make it work much better.I hope this helps.

Sometimes if your caravan J-bracket is too high it strains the stabiliser and makes it groan. Just a word about servicing it yourself; if you don't align the plates properly the friction discs will shatter when you use it again, so if you're not sure let someone else do it.

It is fairly easy and not expensive to change the discs if you are careful and to clean the metel parts, failing that a way I was told and have used with results is to put the business end in a bucket of water for hour or two, this stops it take it out half our or so before use to dry but no wetter than towing in the rain.
