Does anyone know if I can take a Staffordshire bull terrier to Spain. It is our intention to travel from Portsmouth to Bilbao and then immediately travel to France. We have a pet passport but after a number of Internet searches cannot find a definitive answer.
many thanks

We have been taking our Staffie to Spain both via France and directly to Santander/Bilbao for the last few years. Before we did so, we tried like you to glean information. This is what we found: If your Staffie has a pedigree and you have papers this is fine. If your Staffie is a rescue i.e. no papers, or a cross then the official take is that it could be crossed with an illegal breed - pitbull. Our Staffie is a rescue with no papers, and after reading all the blurb we could find, we were nervous to say the least when we travelled abroad. No-one, in either France or Spain has raised the slightest question about our dog. The stewards on the ferry usually make a fuss of her. We always muzzle her to take her from the motorhome to the cabin (we always have a pet friendly cabin) on the ferry. When walking her in both France and Spain I carry her muzzle and passport in my bag, but have never yet been challenged. Most people want to fuss her, and she is only too happy to be fussed! As far as campsites are concerned, we have not had any problems there either. We usually avoid any that stipulate Category 1 and Category 2 dogs excluded, as a Staffie without papers is a Cat 2. Perhaps we have been lucky so far, but we will be going twice next year to Spain and do not expect to have any problems. I hope this helps.
