Are these really worth fitting between the bottle and the Truma bulkhead regulator? If so, which is the best most cost effectvie one to fit? Don't want to pay a pre4mium just because of the name! Thanks.

Hi Surfer.
Fitting a stailess braided hose realt has no great benefit. Some might say it is stronger, but i would say that you shouldn't be loading items that could chaf or cut a gas pipe into your locker anyway. I would prefer to be able to visably see how good or otherwise my gas hose is.

The most common application for stainless braided hoses is on the brake pipes of competition cars. There, the braided outer liner reduces the expansion of the rubber hose when the driver stamps hard on the anchor pedal.

So in short they are only "bling value" to your caravan, and if not replaced annually there isn't any guarantee of longevity.

The only problem I've got with bulkhead mounted regulators is the hose has to withstand full bottle pressure from bottle to reg, having seen the state of older vans neglected hoses, I think it's a disaster waiting to happen!
So as stainless hoses are far stronger and I understand, have something like a 25 year life?... to my mind on safety grounds alone they are well worth it.

However, if you think it's going to help stop your regulator blocking, your wasting your money!

Hi Gary.
You highlighted the fundamental floor in any cosideration of stainless braided hoses. How would anyone know just how old a braided pipe would be on a secondhand van.

Furthermore, while the stainless steel might have a life expectancy of 25 years, the rubber hose will still perish prior to that. Then as the hose is encased in braid, you can not see any deterioration. As you already stated you've seen plenty of perrished and split hoses. That is because they are conventional rubber and open to inspection. I would still prefer a rubber hose that can be visably checked and the gas hose (orange) has a printed manufacture year on it for ready reference.

Steve, your thinking of a rubber hose with a stainless wire mesh covering, this is completely different to 'stainless hoses' being discussed here with no rubber involved.

As regards the other query, the problem of 'oil' contaminating Truma regs was originally blamed on it leaching out of rubber hoses, something those in the trade, who knew better, had a good laugh at!
But if you know no better and come up with an idea to replace rubber with stainless, then is that dishonest?

Ok Gary.
Now if the stainless hoses are ridgid right upto the gas bottle then that is even more concerning. Copper and rubber pipework are both corrosion resisitant and flexable. That is why they are used by the caravan industry.

So please enlighten me as to what pipe you are on about and it's application?

The industrial stainless hoses we used, still had a inner lining, that was not metal, i can't remember what it was, but they where capable of taking 20 bar pressures.

I had a bulk head regulator go on me in the Hghlands in 2008, I replaced the regulator and hose at the time using a stainless steel flexible hose and have had no further problems.I am no expert and am not going to say what caused the regulator to fail. I read many postinf=gs on the subject but no answer as yet. An earlier posting said it was nothing to do with the rubber hoses, maybee someone could tell us vanners what it is down to.
