The van is on my drive so when its stood it is hooked upto the EHU from the house saying that i have been told before not to keep it hooked up because i have a solar panel on the roof and i might be doing more harm to the battery than good ?? Say that not had a problem with the battery for the last 4 years

Don’t see why it should cause a problem. The panel should be enough to keep the battery topped up but leaving it connected to the mains won’t hurt it. The charger on modern vans are very good. No danger of over charging as they just maintain a float charge to keep them topped up. You could if you were concerned turn the charger off and just rely on the solar. Mine is plugged in and on charge all the time in storage as it has a cover on it, consequently the solar doesn’t work and my battery has suffered no ill effects in 4 years.
