We are a group of 4 families with children who have upgraded from tents to caravans and would like to know if anybody can tell of any sites were it is acceptable to sit out talking at night,i dont mean all night partying by any means just chatting and laughing till midnight. We used to go to a lovely site near Barmouth in the Tents that allowed campfires and a certain level of noise but unfortunately doesnt take caravans.

Any help appreciated.

Im afraid I have very strong views on this. If I was pitched up next to you I would be horrified.

Even if people only sit talking quietly at night, four families are going to make quite a bit of noise. Sound travels so much at night that for the caravans pitched next to you, the sound of your conversations would prevent sleep even in the most tolerant of people. Some outfits have children or adults sleeping in the awning with no protection against the noise you are creating.

In your mind it may not be particularly noisy but to someone else it might sound like a herd of elephants.

It would take a braver person than me to approach four families at night and ask them to keep the noise down so I would just have to lie there and put up with it. Should you ruin anyones holiday just so you can sit out late and chat??? I suppose you would be catching up on your sleep the next morning while everyone else is off and gone out for the day leaving no-one to disturb you.

I would suggest you either sit inside your caravans and socialise if you must do it after 10.30pm or find a good pub/club where you are not going to disturb anyone else.

Sorry if this has been a bit of a rant but I have had a few holidays disturbed by folk quite innocently sitting in thier awnings socialising at night without a consideration for others around them. I dont think it possible for four families to sit "quietly" talking, its just not human nature. There would be no point if you were not having a great time and laughing your socks off.

Enough now, Im off to work

I'm in agreement with Ramblingrose.

We have been on many sites where people have been in groups socialising until the small hours. Unfortunately you don't realise how noise carries went you get a nice evening.

We had this pointed out to us a couple of years ago when on a CL. My daughter and son in law came to visit us for the evening, and we were having a laugh and a chat inside the caravan. The "neighboring" trailer tent, although 50m away, pointed out to us that we were being a bit noisy, it was 11pm and our company was just leaving at the time!

If you are on any site, and making any noise beyond 11pm, then you are being extremely selfish, and have no consideration for fellow caravanners/campers.IMO.

My rant over, and I'm off to work!!! Lol

As you are a group of 4 why not book a cl for your stay, you will have to pay for 5 vans but you will be on your own and can stay up as late as you like.

Hi Sean

Haven't you raised this on the other caravan forum?

If it is you, I thought you had decided to book all the pitches on a five van site so that you don't disturb the other caravanners?

Appreciate your strong views on this and we dont want to spoil anybodys holiday which is why i asked the question about sites were this is accepptable. The tent site in we used in barmouth is for people who like to sit and chat and the farmer tells people of this before they pitch. I am quite aware how noise carrys and we also have children who manage to sleep through our chatting. In reply to lmh i have not posted this question elsewere and was not aware that there is any sites were there are just 5 pitches that we could have the whole lot which is why i asked this question in the first place and Wendy if i was extremely selfish and had no consideration for others i would not have asked this question but instead just turned up on on a site next to you and ruined your holiday which we do not want to do to anybody, again this is why i am asking the question.

Please could somebody answer me and tell me were i can find info on sites like the one were we can rent all pitches instead of just telling me off.

Hi there Sean,

Im glad you took my comments in the spirit they were intended and have realised how sound can travel at night.

I was thinking that maybe if you were not holidaying in peak season if you could book your campsite all together and ask the campsite if they had a few spaces well away from everyone else then you guys could party without disurbing anyone.

I know Woolacombe Sands park in North Devon is pretty well spread out and if you asked them they may be able to put you in a section away from everyone else.

Hope this helps

Off to work now, again.........lol

"You" could mean anybody Sean, I didn't mean for you to take it personally! :O)

This is my view from a park owners perpective......for the last 5 years we have a "No late night noise after 11.00pm" rule.

This is well respected by caravan / tents owners, and we enforce this by regular partols around the park. Yes, on odd occasions we have to remind groups of people if they are sat out late at night if they are making too much noise.

In rare cases (thankfully), if the people do not take any notice of me politely reminding them on the rules.....off they have to go the next day. In these cases 100% holidaymakers around the noisy ones are extreemly happy we do take action - they have a good nights sleep the next night!

Happy holidays!

Sean,

You asked earlier where you could find info on sites where you could book all 5 pitches. Both the major clubs i.e The Caravan Club and The Camping and Caravan Club provide this facility for their members and provide information on the location of the sites and the facilites provided on each in their handbook. C.C. 5 van sites are called Certified Locations or C.L.s and the other club's versions are referred to as C.S. Facilites on these sites can vary from water, waste & chemical toilet disposal only to electric hook up and toilets. To be able to use them you and the other caravan owners would need to be members of whichever club the site was associated to. Informtion on some of these sites can be found at this site: http://www.5van.co.uk/

caravan club cl sites only allow 5 vans at a time , soif you booked far enough in advance I'm sure you could come to some arrangement with the owner.

HI Sean. we are in a very similar position to you. We go away in a group of 4 and have an absolute nightmare. we are all younger caravanners and going to bed at 11pm is not a holiday for us!

Have a look at http://www.caravantalk.org.uk/index.php?showtopic=13456

this is my mate who we go away with. it was interesting to see other peoples viewpoint.

Unfortunately, it seems that when you have a caravan, you have to go to bed early!!!

You do NOT have to go to bed early if you have a caravan. You can stay up as long as you wish. As John from Plassey stated the majority of sites adopt a no late noise rule. As long as you behave in a quiet acceptable manner and not act as drunken high spirited louts there should be no problems. I am not in one minute suggesting that you do behave like I described but you should respect the desires of neighbouring caravanners late at night. The question to be considered is what is classed as "noise". I have been on sites where the police have been called at well past midnight to fights and foul language. This is not acceptable and I have not returned to these sites. They were the typical "kiss me quick" sites with club house and late night drinking. It is for this reason that my wife and I now go to, what appears, quieter sites where there is some evening social life but not the type of site that would appear to attract the rowdy element.

We stayed at 'The Plassey' Nr. Wrexham @ 5 years ago, back in the dark ages when we were still in a tent. Whilst quietly chatting with friends at 10.45pm, we heard a knock and saw a torchlight through the canvass, accompanied by a booming voice saying 'be quiet, I can hear you at reception!'. I've no doubt this 'warning' must have woke a few people up and not our low 'mumblings'.

On the other hand, I once approached a group of families that were still up and chatting at 1.30am, and asked them to keep the noise down. I turned and walked away before they had time to remonstrate, which was probably a good idea. On seeing them the next morning in daylight, the father was built like a brick sh*thouse!

The point I'm making is that campers always seemed more tolerant of late night noise, as a lot of activity goes on outside the tent in good weather. As for caravanners, a lot seem content to lock themselves away at 10.30pm and watch tv or go to bed. We're as guilty of this as the next family, but we still have occasions when friends come over and we'll sit outside in the awning and have a reasonably quiet chat after the barbie has burnt out.

Midnight would seem a fairer time to start keeping the noise down.

Hi, I have found the Forestry Commission sites to have a pretty laid back attitude and be self policing - given that they have no full time wardens.

They also have a high proportion of tenters - who by choice or necessity tend to eat and socialise outdoors. There are about 22 site with several in the New Forest. Cheap (

I quite enjoy a late night natter over a few alcoholic beverages, with friends new and old. Sure, voices can get animated but as long as the sound levels aren't raised, I don't see a huge problem. We have ourselves been woken by people chatting late at night, and probably kept a few people awake ourselves. Out of a two week period, if you can't stay up late, for a couple of nights with similarly minded people, it's not going to be a great holiday. It's a time to let your hair down (if you have enough to let down) and enjoy the warm evenings and the long nights. However if someone comes over and tells us it's time to move it indoors, I think that's a reasonable request too.

Hi Sean

While we have no objection to people staying up til the wee hours chatting, like everyone else I would expect the noise to be kept to a moderate roar.

Also should a fellow camper voice (politely) protest to the noise, then one should respect that and reduce the noise or curtail the evening.

All too often people ignor polite conversation and then get rather upset when the plaintif has to resort to talking to "the management" to get resolution.

We are all on holiday to have a good time but respect and consideration should still pervail.

Stay Up past 10.30pm !!!

You must be joking - I was woken by the Bloody Birds chirping at 4.30am this morning and have been up since.

Safe to say I'll be asleep by 9.00 tonight....It seems strange lying in bed whilst all the kids are still playing in the play area....They obviously sleep better than I do.

Even my dear old grandmother used to say "That no good was done after eleven." She would have been 112 yrs old today, aren't we going backwards.
