Sterilising water system

Hi All, This has most likely been asked a thousand times but what is the recommended/best method of flushing the water system at the start of the season? I've read somewhere that Milton and similar will attack the interior of the hot water tank. Is this so? Thanks in advance!

use bi carbonate of soda ..your grandmother would have used it to sterilise and the proof is your are here, works perfectly
