Hi there,

Newbie here as you can see, hope to take the caravan away for the first time next week so have been doing a bit of servicing.

I found that the water filer (Truman) was absolutley disgusting so I've replaced that, I was just wondering if somebody could tell me how to sterilise the rest of the water system?

If it makes any difference the 'van is an Elddis Genisis 3 Ltd.

Many thanks in advance,

Mick.

Mick,

I use Milton, follow the directions on the bottle for dilution rate. Fill up the aquaroll or whatever you use for water container with the solution, run it through your water system, leave to soak then give it a good flush through. There are other sterilising solutions on the market, up to individual choice what you use. Only thing is, apparently they all have a detrimental effect on the charcoal in filters often used in caravans. Either use without the filter or use an old filter with charcoal removed.

Thankyou Graham,

Bit nervous about towing the thing but at 35 I'm getting too old for a tent!

Hi Folks - Why sterilise? Do you sterilise your main feed pipe into the house? We just use a gallon container for drinking water - no problems over many years - John

Hi John,

If you had seen the state of the old filter you would want to sterilise, I'm not saying I would do it every time but it was so disgusting I'm not taking the chance.

I sterilise the water system at the beginning and end of each season, because when the van is not in use it sits there full of damp, no water flowing through, but probably not actually full of water - ideal conditions for moulds etc.

By this means I have never had any problem with drinking the water.

By the way, next Milton you will find the supermarkets own brand - as this is a simple chemical, there is no need to pay any more than the cheapest available.

I am with you on this, sterilise to be safe and free from mould, having done that we drink the water from the tap and see no need to carry water from home or buy bottled as some on the forum do

Admittedly the water never tastes the same as at home but we have very soft water here and can never get used to the hard water around

'Tis true I'm afraid.

A good example is your air-conditioning unit in your car.

If you don't use it, the condensate that ends up in the pipes/tubes goes a bit mouldy and then when you use the air con again, you are met by a bit of a whiff coming out of the vents.

While in constant use (as with the water pipes) you don't have to do a thing. Leave your van alone for a few weeks and you're inviting all manner of nasties to take hold.

Yours, shining

Mac

Whenever I flush out mt system I dismantle the filter ie take off the part that holds the charcoal, and just use the screw bit. This saves any contamination with anything that is in the charcoal. I take it you will be renewing your filter. Ken

Hi mick,

I do not have a inline filter thank goodness, my green coloured water containers at the beginning of the season I completly fill up to the cap level each with fresh house water and insert both with Qty 1 Milton tablet , flush one only through the system .Then fill up the barrels to the cap with fresh water thoroughly rinsing both usually over the flower bed.

Never had any problem with smelly water like a lot of folks do who write into the forum.

At the end of the season , rinse out both barrels once again instead of screwing the caps on I place clean pce of nylon stocking over the filler hole , held in place with elastic band, allows the fresh air to circulate within the barrels.

We have had water flowing through our pipes for the last 20 months 24/7 and the water still tastes terrible if you use it for a brew. The barrels, pump and and pipes have been sterilised so many times I have lost count and given up on that aspect. Without a doubt it is the quality of the pipes in the caravan and nothing else. Although caravan is nearly 3 years old it is still under warranty and I guess it is time for me to chase them on replacing the pipes with something of a better quality.

Hi Mick,

Welcome to caravanning and the friendly forum.

I can only tell you what we do.We steralise at the beginning of each year using milton or similar. As has already been said I fill up the aquaroll and run the liquid through the system.I then leave for 24hrs.THe following day I then flush through the system making sure that the aquaroll is also flushed through.

Hope this helps.
