We're having a look at a '07 Sterling Moonstone tomorrow. Anyone on here have any views on either the 'van or the match of car and 'van. As always, your thoughts always appreciated, thanks.

Cannot comment on the Sterling Moonstone, unfortunately you have not told us what year the Golf is or if its auto or manual.
Just had a quick squiz on What Tow Car and i inputted your van along with a 2009 Golf Diesel 140 and it said that the Moonstone was overweight for the Golf ??
Have a look on What Tow Car for a match as obviously you know the year of your van and car and its varient.

Hello Terry

From the limited information available it seems a 140bhp Golf estate has a maximum towed load of 1500Kg with an expected kerb weight of 1521Kg.

The 07 Moonstone has an MTPLM of 1434 so the towing ratio is :-

100 x 1434/1521 = 94%

The car being diesel should have enough performance even when towing.

Whilst it would be legal, and possible it is on the high side especially as the general guidance is the weight of the caravan should be kept as small as possible.

The caravan industry suggest that you should not exceed 85%.

However good towing is not just about weight ratio's, it also down to safe loading, good vehicle maintenance and good driving habits.

Yes thanks for your input. We have bought an '07 Abbey 416 GTS. Didn't like the Moonstone. I also realise the Golf aint up to towing for touring, So, I have for sale an '08 Bailey Pageant Monarch first, then an '04 VW Mk4 Golf Estate 130 6 speeder with 71k on it in really good nick. Any takers? Don't know if its etiquete, but anyone interested, can call on 07546 561253.

Perhaps i may have missed something or i might be having a "Grey Moment" but i was of the impression from your post that you did not already own the VW Golf Estate and that you were enquiring regarding wanting to purchase one and asking about its towing abilities ??
