gagakev please dont try and mae me out to look like im in the wrong here.
The day i bought the van i was offered a job, since i didnt think i was going to get the use out of it i decided to sell it. I think i probably used it twice while i had it...my mrs spent some time by herself in it while i was working.
I have since discovered that i have more time on my hands and decided to get another one which is going through the cris registration process.

Hopefully you feel that ive explained myself enough. I asked for advice on here as i thought it was he best place to come. Everyone has without a doubt been more helpfull than i can possibly imagine and a big thank you goes to them.

And yes im telling you that it quite clearly has never been cris registered. Please dont make me out to be a liar.

If it has quite clearly never been registered how did they know the van was stolen? . By the way all van's after 1992 are CRIS registered.

This is another on of these threads where the forum does not have the whole story, and as a result some doubts are creeping in.

I'm not accusing the OP of lying or trying to mislead, but as with every argument there's more than one side, but we are only seeing part of the problem.

Consequently it is very difficult to offer concise advice as there may be some detail we do not have access to that changes the complexion of the situation.

The only cast iron advice we can give is to seek professional legal advice.

I think prof’s correct in what he as said and I have no reason to question your integrity natsdad. I basically tried to clarify things you’ve said to try and understand. Others and myself may say something that leads you to find something out?

Like:

My vans numbers are on the inside of the double glazed windows, to alter them would be a sophisticated task or you change the complete set.

You say the plates been doctored – how do you know your quoting the correct number? – did someone make one van out of two? The original owner must have had a document sent to them, whether they used it is another question? I think I’d sit tight and wait for the chain to work before I paid anything out.

My thoughts are someones going to be done for fraud – just sit tight and wait and let them take all the hit.

I agree with John here. It is purely conjecture and speculation that is written her as we are not in full knowledge of the case or qualified solicitors. Therefore one should not wave the branding iron around.

IMO, buying a caravan from a dealership should give the purchaser both peace of mind that the van is genuine and also give the new purchaser reasonable financial protection should the van be found to be stolen prior to that point of sale.
I actually bought my caravan via a well known dealer in the forest of dean. At their Gloucester depot, they had a new fleetwood van that had been "lost at the factory". It was a 2006 model that had not been "found" until late 2008 and then registered as new. needless to say the peculiar explination did ring alarm bells. I then bought my van from the forest of dean depot. I negotiated a £1000 discount for cash sale and had the van serviced by them and a new 110amp batery fitted. Now, I assumed that the dealer would of registered the transfer of ownership with CRIS. However they didn't. I have susequently registered the change of ownership myself. But it is a worrying process as you are clearly told by CRIS that they will automatically inform the police if the van that you have bought turns out to be dodgy.

I think it's about time that CRIS and a form of proper registration of caravans with perhaps the DVLA is devised. At lest then you would have some sort protection that is readilyquantifiable by way of a PNC vehicle check. By the same token, I would expect caravan dealerships to be able to be brought to account, if they sell caravans that are part of the CRIS scheme.

To me it seems that given the current situation here, your no better off than the guy who buys his caravan through the local private sale adds in the news paper.

If I was in Natsdad's position I would certainly not pay out any claim of cash entitlement until I've been instructed to do so by a court judge. I would also consider sueing the dealership not only for the value of the caravan bought in good faith, but also for my legal fees and also for the emotional distress caused to me and my family.

Thanks all for the replies.
The chain is this.
Caravan stolen in 2004 from original owner
Dealer sells caravan in 2004
4 owners later I buy it
I sell it and the new owner when he tries to register it discvers that 2 numbers have been changed on ALL the windows. When the police checked the vin that to had been altered.

Thanks for all the advice and i know that my integrity is still intact.
Time for legal advice.

Thanks again

A solicitor is the only answer.
Just to complicate things you have to remember the caravan has depreciated in value over the years . So those who had it longer than you may have to pay a kind of rental or whatever ??? What a minefield.

Please tell us the final outcome.
BTW is the Dealer still trading?

As far as im aware the dealer is still trading, but i only know this due to the fact that the person that i sold it to managed to contact them.
Ill keep you posted as to how I get on. Ive got the Police coming to get a statement next week and am going to a solicitor aswell.

Thanks again
