We're travelling to the Highlands for our main holidays this year, but I'll not make the drive in one hitso need to stop overnight.

I reckon I should stop somewhere around the Lockerbire area, give or take 30 mile or so, any suggestions for a suitable stop?

cheers

Kev

I would recommend the Camping & Caravanning Club site at Moffat. Its about a mile and a half from junction 15 off the A74(M).

Its a great little village with a Co-op within five minutes walk of the site, great for stocking up prior to going further north.

There are two fish & chip shops, one chinese takeaway and an indian restaurant that bdoes carry outs, if you do not wish to cook after a long day on the road. Most of the pubs do bar meals, there are about eight pubs / hotels. At easter my wife and I ate in the Star Hotel - very good! The tennants lager in the Stag Hotel, coupled with the friendly staff and customers also warrants a mention.

I must not forget that the loo block has the biggest shower cubicles I've ever seen and to the usual high standard of the C & CC.

If you do decide to give this site a try, I must warn you that from the south the slip road does almost a hairpin bend - slow down to around 30mph and still be prepared to brake.

Have good holiday!

Steve.

I agree with Steve's comments apart from the hotel recommendations, as we did not try them so cannot comment, but I am sure they are good.

Just remember if you travel at the weekend that the C&CC have a 2 night minimum rule.

Good luck with the Highlands, it is supposed to be a good summer, but usually the forecasters only look at the London area.

We'll be travelling over the weekend so the 2 night rule is a real pain.

While we hope the weather is good we've some experience of Scottish summers, enough to pack good water proofs!!

Does anyone know if we can stopover on a motorway service area?

thanks for the replies

We have stopped at the CCC site at Moffat, very easy to get back onto M74.

Have also used CC CL at Pallet Hill Penrith

Page 326 in Sites book and found time to pop to Ullswater to, whilst there.

Hi there you should try Dandy Dinmont Caravan park which is only about 6 miles from the Scottish border and is only about a mile and a half off junction 44. This is a great site we are regular visitors to it and have never had any complaints. The nearest town is Longtown which has a great little chip shop a chineese takeaway and a Spar. The site is well kept and quiet and is an ideal stopover point on the way to Scotland. Hope this helps you!

Hi Kevin

A very nice site near Lockerbie is Hoddom castle.

The park is in the castle grounds.

Web site is www.hoddomcastle.co.uk
Hoddom Castle is a brilliant site - stayed there several times and going again this bank holiday! Spacious site - kids love it.

I can recommend Cressfield Caravan Park at Ecclesfechan - just of Junction 19 of the M74 about a mile or two - very handy to get off and back on the M74 and a very nice site including the toilet block - the only downside is a bit of noise from the M74 but otherwise Ok - have a look at their website

Thanks for all the replies.

Andrew we're going to a place near Inverness in the last week of July, hoping to see some dolphins and whales if we're very lucky, and then onto Glencoe the 1st week of August.

We're also travelling up on Friday night, and will be breaking the return journey in the Lakes,

We've not yet booked anywhere, I'll work through the responses on this thread and see what I can book.

It seems a shame to book onto a proper site for one night, but if the owners will let us, then that's what we'll do.

regards

Kevin

Hi Kevin

don,t know if you have booked your holls yet but we stayed at Rosemarkie caravan site a few years ago

we were parked right on the sea front and every night we went to the light house and the Dolphins came in close and and jumped and played it was fantastic.
