suggestions for towcars

We own an abbey spectrum 620 which is 1740kg. We currently tow it with a landrover discovery. We woiuld like to swap to an mpv. We can't afford to buy a new car so would be looking at vehicles from late 90's to early 2000's.

Any suggestions would be appreciate.

I doubt whether many MPV's other than the Kia Sedona would be a safe enough match to your van. The Sedona has a kerb weight of about 2168Kgs in Diesel form so would be fine. I think there was something about them in last months PC mag!

VW Caravelle or Mercedes Viano,Vito or V class diesel variants will cope with the weight and give much more room than the Disco.

If your discovery was stable enough to tow your caravan, the likes of an Alhambra tdi 130 will be much more stable than the Disco despite being lighter. The Alhambra is regarded as the best of it's sisters from Ford & VW as it apparently has sport suspension as standard and will give 40+ mpg solo. The Sedona is only a little better than the Disco on fuel.

We were lucky enough to find a sedona very cheap on ebay. All it needed was a new fuel pump and had a few scrapes and a bit of trim missing.

As it is it turned out that the sedona had a faulty fuel gauage and as a result had air or dirt in the injectors. So turned out to be extremely cheap!!!
