What did an upgrade kit consist of? At one time Cibie headlights started to become after market accessories.
A whole light unit replacement, reflector and bonded on front lens with H4 logo a moulded on feature; VW Bettle, can't remember now if it was our 6 volt one or one of the newer 12 volt cars.
I do remember how impressed we were with the lighting improvement the conversion made.

I recall fitting Wipac Quadoptics to replace the Lucas sealed beam units on a couple of cars - huge improvement - one Escort received the full boy racer treatment with 4x Cibie Oscars !

It is a very personal thing. My wife suffers from the same problem. She is dazzled by practically all oncoming traffic fitted with anything more light intensive than halogen headlamps. On the other hand, I don't have an issue when confronted by exactly the same situation. Only in extreme cases do I find that I have to concentrate more on looking in the direction of the nearside until the oncoming vehicle has passed, basically filtering the bright light on the offside out. I can't say that it's ever a big problem for me.

In the 1980’s a friend had a Lancia Beta with twin headlights. Where I worked we could get servicing done on our cars. He had his car in the workshop for the day. During this time many of us got together to ‘update ‘his headlights. New units were built incorporating candles.

He was not impressed.

Of course the other issue not mentioned is the driver with the extremely brights lights reflecting in your rear mirrors. Many cars have the internal rear mirrors that deflects the light straight away, but others you have to manually switch over.

I complained of this issue a couple of eye tests ago, and was advised to consider Zeiss coated lenses with a very minor distance prescription. They are transformational, in that they significantly reduce the starburst effect -which, by the way, can be early signs of cataracts- and also reduce the glare.

My current specs are supposed to be anti glare, but do not seem to be very effective? Maybe pay the extra for a quality pair with decent anti glare. Hardly ever drive at night so mainly for those really sunny days when they sometimes occur.

Some metal frames can pick up light from above or the sides and throw glare across the lens even if the lens has an anti glare coating. I had a pair of frames replaced for this reason by my opticians. It was annoying in sunlight, but overhead light glare could be reduced by wearing a hat. At night though the frames could refract light from vehicles towards the side of my line of vision. I was even considering going to a plastic frame but the replacement metal frames resolved it.
