Superfast reduces services ex Scotland

Superfast Ferries who sail between Rosyth and Zeebrugge have announced that they are to reduce their services on this route to 3 sailing per week in each direction. Bit sad really as it's another 20000 plus truck journeys back on our roads.

this was front page news a few weeks ago here in fife, mentioned about job losses etc,superfast did this last year as well,the other/spare ferry went into get serviced and was swapped over at new year.they have also slowed the ferry down to save fuel,takeing longer to cross.

We tried pricing this ferry a few years ago as we live in Aberdeen and thought it would be cheaper than going to Dover. When we had worked out all the costs it was actually cheaper to drive to Dover, cross to Calais and drive to Holland. Not surprised they are cutting back as they are far too expensive.

Perhaps thats what Monkey meant, 20,000 truck journeys from Scotland down the M6 or A1(M)to Dover or Harwich.

Just for clarification this story was carried last week in the main transport trade newspaper - Motor Transport. According to their figures (I guess supplied by Superfast) the two boats carried just over 40,000 freight units in 04-05 year this incidentally was up from 32,000 the previous year (over 20% increase!!).

The Over 20,000 figure is a division of two (two down to one boat) However in my experience it very hard to schedule drivers and vehicles when a service operates that infrequently. Therefore for some they will say (stuff it) and I would put a decent bet on there figures being under 20K next year

Coming from the north of Scotland, we have booked Superfast through Eurocamp Independent for next July / Aug.

I agree with what has been said. I also live in Scotland and looked at this route, but the price was higher than virtually all the others for a similar crossing time. Yes, I know it is longer but the costs seem to rise disproportionately for the routes in northern Britain compared to routes further south. I include the DFDS and Hull/Rotterdam services in this. They all quote around

I hail from Ayrshire plus i'am a haulier and found that the overall cost was very competitive with other crossing, the only problem was that the time of arival on the continent was far to late as half the day was lost in docking. It would be much better arriving at 7am or so.
