Swift Challenger curtains

I've just bought a 1990 Swift Challenger, with curtains in a dusky pink made of a sort of crushed velvet material.

Can these curtains be washed normally in washing machine, or do they have to be dry cleaned?
 
I have in the past washed these curtains although I did them by hand in water that was not too hot. You will also get a better result if you put a bit of fabric conditioner in the rinse water. You could put them in the washing machine to spin but only on the 'wool' cycle.
