Swiss chat

Hi

I'm a brit living in Switzerland. A beautiful country but watch out if you drive here! Here's a few quirks that caught me out when I first came and which seem very illogical to most brits.

1) If a junction has no markings (mainly in towns) then traffic from the RIGHT has priority, EVEN if your road ahead appears straight. I know someone, who had a crash because he didn't know this.

2) Traffic lights with a green arrow to turn right. Watch out! You may be expected to give pedestrians priority and they may have a green man lit. Often there is a flashing yellow light to remind you.

3) When leaving a roundabout, signal your intention. The police sometimes wait on exits and hand out fines. Ouch! That's how I learnt this one for the first time.

Hope that's of use to anyone considering a visit. Oh, you'll need a 'Vignette' for the motorways, which is a kind of tax disc. You can buy them at most border posts or petrol stations. Look out for speed cameras too. They are everywhere.

Best regards and greetings from Switzerland.

Alan
