I am going to Lake Garda in June, I thought that I had made my mind up to go via Switzerland and the St Gothard tunnel.

Yesterday a mate suggested going via Austria and the Brenner pass,he dosn't own a caravan, but has driven this route several times in a car. Has anyone travelled both routes towing, if so which would they suggest for a first timer to either route.

Hi Steve W

We have been to Italy several times and I tend to use the Austrian route, but either would be fine for a first timer. Through Germany is a little longer and the Austrian road charges are only about 7 Euros. Through Switzerland you pay about

Hi Barry.

Could you give me some idea of how long the Austrian route takes and where you stopped on route?

Hi Steve.

The route through Germany and Austria (from Dunkerque) is about 800 miles, but it is all motorway, and the Brenner pass is a very easy, modern road. ......so how long would you take to do 800 miles on a motorway? I would say three days now - but less in my younger days!!

Cannot recommend any sites on the way as I last did it three years ago.

Regards

Hi Steve W

We usually cross the channel and then take 3 days of easy driving. Once we crossed Sunday lunchtime and were on Garda by Tuesday at about 3.30pm. So it can be done in a good 2 days. It depends where your home is and how long you take to get to Dover, and how long you want to drive each day. Our usual overnight stops are now near Augsburg at exit 73. There are about 3 sites within 2 miles of exit, we use Camping Lech. Also we use a site just into Luxembourg at Remich called Camping Port. This is a pretty little town right on the river about 2 miles off motorway to Saarbrucken. This year we are going to try for a site at Steinfort just into Luxembourg from Arlon. ( we have never used it before....so if other people have any details it would be helpful).

If you want to see the Neuschwanstein castle and Linderhof then there is a great little site at Reutte just into Austria and much less busy than those in Fussen near the castles. Check out the internet for these castles they are worth a look.

Hope these details are ok for you.

Happy travels
