As we have all been aware, the recent flooding in Cumbria and North Wales has resulted in many areas and campsites becoming inaccessible. Keswick campsite is currently underwater and there are flood warnings issued for areas around Pooley Bridge near Penrith, the Keswick Campsite, the Eden Golf Club at Crosby on Eden near Carlisle, Armathwaite near Carlisle and Rickerby Park in Carlisle. Flood alerts - the lower level - remain for the length of the River Eden, and the rivers Cocker, Marron and Derwent.
Since 1st November 2015 the rain gauge at Shap in Cumbria has seen 1145mm (45in) of rain in seven weeks, about 65% of the usual annual rainfall for the area. Snowdonia has seen 1779 mm (70in) in the same period, about 60% of the annual rainfall.
Without attempting to put a dampener (sorry for the pun) on your festive activities take care during this period if you are away in your van or motorhome. Accidents happen in fast flowing floodwater. Avoid walking or driving in or near floodwater. Driving in floodwater significantly increases risk of drowning. Do not let children play in floodwater. There could be hidden dangers like sharp objects, raised manhole covers and pollution. Walking or even driving through floodwater is risky – six inches of fast flowing water can knock you over and two feet of water will float your car.
Listen out for flood warnings on radio and television and follow any advice from the emergency services. You can also phone the Environment Agency Floodline on 0345 988 1188 or 0845 988 1188.
