We get a tangy plastic taste in our water when our on board tank is 75% -100% full. If we only fill to 50% we don't get the taste. We've tried all sorts of sterilising solutions but nothing seems to work. Has anyone else experienced this and do they have a remedy ?

This could be one that I could help with from experience.

When you arrive at your van do you.

1. Use a water butt

2. Connect dirrect to the mains.

1A Wash out barell

2B Allow water to pass to waste for at least 2 minutes, this will allow all standing water to be flushed.

3. Boil the kettle once, use water for the bowl for after.

3A Boil water in the kettle for the second time to over come

the problem of a standing kettle.

4. Use an inline cartridge filter on your hose pipe available

e.bay or a Koi carp dealer.

Note 2B & 3A worked for me, no comlaints about the tea now

Well we do not ever drink the water from the "on board" tank or water carrier. Sometimes the water from the site taps taste as it comes through plastic pipes. We take water from home that has been through a water filter or buy water in the large bottles to drink or make coffee tea with etc., We usually keep a container in the van and test the water from the site tap and if it is OK use it that way. We only use the water from tank for washing and showers etc.,

We never drink the water from the van. Always fill a small container daily from the on site tap. Caravan pipes are plastic and it is much more likely that problems will occur unlike house pipework which has constant flowing water through copper pipes.

The infamous Bailey TCP tasty water problem in our van from new was put down to a batch of pipe used which reacted to Floride in the mains water. You could even smell it. Tea made from Caravan tap water was out of the question.

Water direct from the water hog or the site tap was fine.

Bailey changed the pipes and hey presto - no tasty water.

We had the problem again after I bought a cheap extention for the aquasource. Extention now discarded.

As a matter of interest John above, you may have copper pipe in your house, but underground over the past 30 years has all been plastic and of course modern pushfit is mainly plastic.

Good quality food grade pipes and don't drink water through the caravan system seems to be the answer.

We had a similar problem with our Bailey. The pipes were changed and the foul taste disappeared. We were told that Bailey had a batch of piping delivered which had been standing outside for some considerable time and a chemical reaction had occurred within the plastic due to long exposure to direct sunlight.

THANK YOU - YOUR PROBLEM IS IDENTICAL TO OURS. WE CAN SMELL THE ODOUR AS WELL. WAS HOPING THERE WOULD BE A REMEDY WITHOUT CHANGING PIPEWORK. IT COULD ALSO BE THAT WE'VE BEEN USING A NEW HOSE AT HOME TO FILL SO THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE PROBLEM.

MANY THANKS

Julie,

Most of the replies you have had are all valid but none of them answer your original question as to why there is no taste when the on board tank is 50% full.

Very interesting eh!
