What is the difference between Kerbweight and Unladen weight. I'm trying to find out if an Audi A6 with an Unladen weight of 1540kg and a gross weight limit of 2120 will be OK for towing a Sterling explorer with an MIRO of 1428kg and an MTPL of 1706kg. I don't understand the link between unladen weight and kerbweight.
 
The terms unladen weight and kerbweights are actually a bit vague and open to some interpretation. In order to standardise the definition throughout the industry, including the rest of Europe, they were replaced by 'mass in running order' (MIRO), as defined in EU Directive 92/21/EEC. Regardless of whether manufacturers continue to use the old terms, they are actually quoting figures according to current standards, so it will always be the same.

Actually, the unladen or kerbweights published in brochures etc. can only be taken as a rough guide as these weights can vary a lot from car to car depending on its level of equipment. Usually the published figures are for the base vehicle without any optional extras. Actual measured figures can be significantly higher. Differences of 100kg or even more are not unusual.

You don't say what Audi A6 you are taking about. The 2.4 manual, for example, has a maximum permissible towload of only 1500kg which wouldn't cover your needs. However, other variants may tow up to 1900kg.
