That darn extractor fan

The extractor fan on our 08 Acefirestar didn't work on our weekend break last week, l assume it's the fuse again as that's what discover told us when we picked it up on the warranty 18 months ago, won't know until l check it out later this week.

l believe it's a known fact that the extractor fan blows the fuse if you accidentally change direction of the fan while running, can't remember if this is what happened has it was running o/k last year, it's the only thing l didn't check before we left last Thursday for our trip to Chatsworth.

Any one else had the problem with the extractor fan, someone said increase the fuse size but reluctant to do this as it may effect the warranty

SWMBO keeps flicking the "reverse" switch and blowing the fuse.

I keep telling her to wait until the fan stops . Anyone know a simpler word than stop?

Never increase the capacity of the recommended fuse. That's a no no unless an electrical expert says ok.

Cheers

Lets be honest these fans are junk, the lifting mechanism is a long standing problem, they make a racket when working, and just for a hat trick, the fuse blows if you try a quick reverse, the fan is constructed of nasty cheap plastic, if they were on the options list my answer would be no thank you.

Just to compound that on my 2004 bailey the fan is sited on the opposite side to the cooker? Design, what design.

Yep, I know a simpler word than stop.

Extend index finger of either hand and apply with medium velocity to her eye. Again, either eye will do nicely :)

Once practised a few times this will become a natural reflex action to apply swift corrective action when dopiness prevails.

In the words of the Meerkat, "Simples" :)

PS, make sure you are nearest the door when doing this. Always good to have an escape route.

Hi Ray,

There was a previous post somewhere about extractor fans, with very polarised views pro and against.

We fell into the pro camp and really miss the fan on our latest Ace Supreme. Noisy - yes, opening mechanism - not the best, but great for extracting steam and cooking smells that somehow don't seem to want to leave through the open window :(

HI! Tony fully agree with you, mine works very well its not the fan thats at fault its the operator to blame. common sence that you leave it to stop before changing direction. again you wouldn,t do it with your car drive along at 30mph then put it in reverse and expect it to stop then change direction all within 10ft (just an example)so don,t go blaming the extractor fan .

cheers Duggie

Tony

I am a big fan of extractor fans, i have two in my kitchen, one over the oven, another over the hob. The difference being they are quality.

In our van above the cooking area we have the large sun roof, we open that along with the window, all the cooking smells leave in silence. If you have the openings in the correct place, the extra weight, cost, and noise of a budget extractor fan, are not necessary. Just my thoughts, i don't expect everyone to think the same. But my last two vans have had these fans, that spans 13 years, rarely use them.

I would not be without our extractor fan on our Abbey. We use it all the time. Have blown the fuse once reversing the motor by mistake. I note that no Swift group caravans have them now which would not do for us, but a sales guy at the NEC show said the wiring is already fitted in the roof and the dealer can change the rooflight fitted for an omnivent. perhaps someone from Swift could confrim this?

I think these fans are a waist of time, they make a lot of noise and dont move much air. They also stop a lot of light over the kitchen area. Take them out and put a Heki roof light in instead , ventilation and light.

I can add another reason not for having one and that's the light you lose, upside is dealers generally retro fit them so often have 'pulled' slightly used mini Heki's they may sell you at a discount?!

As for the fuse, while upping the amperage is always a no no, changing it for a timed or slow blow of the same amperage, may well take the overload of reversing it too early while still giving the correct overall protection.
