Hi

I was at a caravan dealers recently and the salesman was adamant the the mule was the best security device on the market. Was he trying to sell one or are they as good as he says. What do all you forum members think are the best.

I understand the theory that if they want it they will get it but if they want mine then i want to make it as difficult as possible. Is there a stand out product or am i better just fitting multiple systems,ie a wheel clamp on each wheel,a hitch lock.a ground anchor and chain,a security post and a hungry doberman. what else is there?

Our caravan has a mule fitted. I would say it is a good security device, but only as good as the rest of them.

Did get me an extra 10% off the insurance though.

We had a mule fitted to a twin axle Hobby (26' long) which was accommodated on a seasonal pitch. Yes, it was a good device. However, if you have a touring caravan take note of the extra weight as this will certainly affect your payload.

Ever ready to ask the stupid question: Whats a mule?

Yes, O.K.what's a mule apart from being the sterile offspring resulting from the mating of two seperate species?

It is a device that fits in the floor Usually I think by the door and when in use you lower a 'leg' a bit like a corner steady and if the van is towed away it digs into the ground preventing movement. Its value I suppose it that its winder is in the van, however I have often wondered what damage it does to the van if a van is moved with it lowered.

beware before fitting this device???

maybe someone else will remember, but i recall some insurances companies were nor prepared to insure a caravan with this device fitted.caravans have been stolen with this device active and the damage that has been done is horrendous,in fact i'm sure the damage was that bad that it led to some caravan insurance companies giving the mule a wide berth,so ask your insurance company before fitting

Hi Mark

I had a look but it doesn't show all of the van but I assume it is a Hobby or some other foreign van because as I say if it is british van it is the wrong way round.

Regards the Mule security device. I fitted one of these to a caravan I owned about ten years ago. I spoke with the manufacturers by phone about fitting and one or two concerns I had and found them very helpful.

Can I say that the device is in no way fitted or secured to the floor of the van as many people seem to think. It is clamped on to the chassis with security bolts, once you have the device in correct position the hex heads of the bolts are snapped off by increasing the torque applied, this leaves dome shaped heads in place which would not be able to be taken off with tools. I believe it would be impossible to tow a vehicle with this device in position unless the towing vehicle was an HGV or similar, even then it would be ploughing a furrow along the road. That is not to say the Mule could not be removed either by cutting or burning. I have never heard of an insurance company refusing to insure a van fitted with one of these but know that at least two were offering discounts to users.

I believe that the company have carried out upgrades to the device and now have a version which can be operated from outside the van. I have no recent knowledge of these improvements.

Downside is that, unless new devices are different, once fitted you cannot remove it and refit if you change your van.

I never got another when I changed my van mainly because I couldn't find a suitable location in the van for the internal winding nut.

Robert
