Presenter Adrian Chiles with some reasonable footage has just said Caravan site bookings are up 40% on last year. I'd love to see the manufacturers sales figures. Maybe there are owners out there who have finally decided to make better use of their asset?

NB. Must remember to book 2010 sites as soon as they become available. LOL.

Cheers

Used to enjoy that show but have gone right off that man with what happened to Carol Thatcher. Never been a fan of Jo Brand and what she said on QI about Lady Thatcher is surely open to a wrap across the knuckles or is the BBC left wing and anti-Thatcher.

Colin on both counts you are correct about the beeb Left Wing and anti Thatcher.

The comment about a 40% increase comes from the Caravan Club !!!!!!!!

That's probably because of the hits the Caravan Club got whilst their website was 'down' - it's probably steam driven, and has done a double count of all the bookings that 'failed' whilst in the process - and then they'll wonder why the no shows numbers are up again this year! I checked out Rowntree Park as we're off to a wedding in York in June - and thought it might be better to stay overnight, and found there are about two free days in October, and one in November, then yet another in December, and that's it for the remainder of the year!

Our local caravan dealer, on Saturday, said that things had gone quiet - but that if people were looking they were looking at second hand vans.

OK so they tried to make it as positive as they could but we could not avoid the odd negative comment. My gripe is that they just do not do proper research and get most of what they say wrong. I could do a better job!

I would guess that the CC will have higher than normal no shows this year.

How long have we been hearing that people are likely to holiday in the UK this year. Some people add it up and think better get some sites booked up early just in case I cant get in.

I really do think the deposit system CCC operate is spot on and others have commented you never hear complaints about no shows over in that rally field , do you?

We have never been to either a CC or C&CC site but from what we have read and heard about the sites, the facilities and the prices we will stick to quiet commercial sites which we have found to be cheaper and more user friendly. In fact we are thinking of resigning from the CC when our renewal comes up as the only benefit we see is the monthly magazine. Will keep up with the C&CC membership as we are members of the RAC "Arrivals" road side breakdown service.

I too saw the one show.

I expect we are going to see a large rise in caravan site bookings in the uk, as people tighten their belts financially and stop paying hundreds of pounds to sail on ferries.

I for one prefer to see the views of wales and the west country and can have a couple of extra weeks away on the saving of the ferry charges.

Personally, I would like to se a loyalty scheme for caravanners who support the uk rather than line the pockets of europe.

I have been a member of both cc and c&cc in the past but didn't see any real benifits compared to using this forum and related site search pages to find all our sites in the last 25 years of caravanning.

I found the piece to be the usual ill researched rubbish and have emailed them to say so.For example they set themselves out to discuss the resurrgence (their words)in tourer caravans and went on to spend a lot of time talking about statics and their tin roofs (aluminium of course)They used the CC site at Chapel lane and showed a lovely scene of cricket being played amongst the vans on an empty pitch(where was the warden.lol)

The older woman presenter also commented that in the last 6 months 1300 jobs had been lost in Scarborough from a caravan manufacturer. Why no mention of Avondale or Fleetwood (especially as the show is produced about 20 mile from Avondale)also there are to the best of my knowledge no caravan manufacturers in Scarborough the nearest is Carnaby at Bridlington who make statics and still in business I believe,I dont think even Swift employ that many.

caravan sales are on the up becasue at the end of the year all the dealers run specials to clear out old stock. Figures for February and March may show a different story.

As for the caravan club stating books are up, how do they work that out of the same members book up every weekend available? In essence, for example, if the membership base is smaller, but if more bookings are made by those fewer members, it does not necessary reflect that there are more members or caravanners.

Pat - it's many years since we 'did' the Black Forest. We've been twice, once with motorhome shared with friends, and once in a Canvas Holidays tent. I wouldn't like to recommend the sites we used then (though they were lovely places - but time has passed since). However, there are several sites in Germany which are part of the 'discount' schemes we use (www.campingcheque.co.uk, www.touringcheque.co.uk, www.vacancesoleil.co.uk (Soleil Cheques - which is a new one, but offers some sites at

I think those that travel abroad might be in for a surprise at how costs have escalated in the last 6 months or so.Even in 2007, a 4 week touring trip in France cost us about

Helbolzheim last year was very good indeed so is Camping Alisehof which is a 5 star site. Both are ACSI Camping card sites at 15 euro's and are mentioned in CC Europe book.

With regards to being expencive in Europe. I don't agree France is more expencive and Italy. But Germany and Austria are still a lot cheaperthan the UK with one thing being a lot cheaper Diesel. 77p litre in Germany 69p litre in Austria. Food is not as expensive as this county either.

In my earlier posting I mentioned a cheap Norfolk Line ferry - well it can now be had even cheaper (two nights in England perhaps). This is copied from another posting:

This is copied from another forum:

Anyone thinking of booking a ferry may be interested in the Norfolk Line offer which I saw at the NEC on Tuesday.

Car + 4 people + caravan less than 12m in length, low season
