In view of some of the comments above, I thought I would add the following:

brian (st albans) - You are right, so have a laugh at my expense; I have checked and my car does drive at 5mph (as shown by sat nav) with no throttle in first gear at 850 rpm. The speedo indicated around six mph at this speed. Accelerating from this speed with the 'van attached without using the clutch would be stressing the engine unnecessarily, I would think - the handbook says to change down if pulling at less than 1200 rpm.

Damian - My car is a Golf TDI130 (therefore a diesel), and I agree, having towed with both petrol and diesel, that the latter is superior for this purpose.

I think that is all I have to say on this subject

Enjoy your holidays

Looking at the average shape of the average Brit, and I doubt if they could manage 100 meters per hour. I admit fully to not being as light as I wish, mainly due to the sedentary aspects of work, but I suspect I could puff my way through a few miles.

My main problem is my knees have given up on me, and become very painful after a while. The Doc tells me it is old age, b......d ligaments and nothing can be done. I disagree and have found cycling and swimming just as effective without the shocks.

Lord B,

My lord, may I humbly suggest you try "selective listening" it works like this; at random intervals during your Ladyship's ramblings you nod your head, at equally random intervals you say "yes dear" and again, using equally random intervals, you intersperse the one sided conversation with "you don't say dear" or the devastating conversation stopper "what a good idea, that sounds feasable dear, I'll look into that"

It's worked for me for over 36 years of marriage, & I've survived unscathed (relatively!), so my Lord it might, just might, work for you as well! however, I offer no guarantee as to it's effectiveness with her Ladyship.

I remain your lordship, etc.etc.
Tried it George, I'm forever get my yays/nays/nods and shakes wrong :O(

Lord B,

My lord, methinks one needs more practice!

Scotch Lad,

I thimk that the advice from my army day's apply:

Never run when you can walk

Never walk when you can stand still

Never stand still when you can sit down

Never sit down when you can lay down

Never lay down if you can't go to sleep

Whenever I feel the need to excersise, I lay down in a darkened room untill the feeling passes!

If you really, really need to excersise, do it first thing in the morning before your brain realises what you are doing!
