Thetford toilet flush?

We were on site this weekend when a neighbour asked for help.
Caravan about 4 years old.
They were on their first trip out since October last year.
Everything worked fine apart from the toilet flush.
The system had been drained down and flushed through prior to the Winter.
Turned out to be that the pump was partially jammed with some sort of sediment / brackish water.
Strip down and clean got it working perfectly..
Never heard of this before.
Is there any way of preventing this happening again?.
Easy enough job, but not for everybody!.

My own experience says if you don’t use a pink flush water tank additive black algae and debris builds up as you describe. When draining down it is important to fully flush and drain . Some Thetfords like my c250 needed a modification to achieve full drain down.

Elsewhere, it is usually the pink flush stuff that is blamed for 'black-bits' clogging the pump!
My preference is for plain water with just a drop of washing-up liquid to break the surface tension. Use a hand spray for whatever perfumes you prefer

Any of the additives left in the tank over a prolonged period of time will gel and can block pumps and pipes.
The best advice is to use plain water, no additives in the flush.
If you must have a fragrance, use a spray bottle with whatever you want in it.

To remove any algae that has already built up, use a couple of capfuls of bleach in a full tank of water, leave overnight and drain, then go to plain water.
