Thuringia Saxon Switzerland in Germany

Planning a trip to Germany next Summer but will not be taking the caravan or dogs this time so plan on staying in inns/guesthouses or farms. The central area of Thuringia and Saxon Switzerland looks to be an interesting destination as we can then also visit Prague too. We like visiting villages, small towns, historic sites and the countryside in general. We would be sure to pack walking boots and the bike carrier. Has anyone got any experience of that area?

We have been travelling and spending many holidays in Germany and Austria over the last 30 years or more only the last 8 with the caravan. We never booked anything but stopped in Gastofs along the way or Bed and Breakfasts which you can find by the sign outside the building 'Zimmer Frei' Other than that now a days you can often rent static caravans or apartments on Caravan Sites in Europe.

Its a pity you are not taking the caravan. We were in that area earlier in the year when we visited Berlin and briefly Magdeburg. My blog here gives details of our trip. On an earlier visit we also went to Dresden. Perhaps big cities are not your thing?

Thuringia is typical walking country, especially in the Thrunigian Forest near Eisenach (Wartburg Castle with its close associations with Martin Luther is closeby) and the Rhön mountains a little further south. My wife's uncle lives in Dresden (beautiful city) so we have been that way a number of times. Don't miss the Elbe River Gorge in Königstein, a little south west of Dresden, on your way to Prague.

Thank you for your tips. We are not taking the van (or dogs) as we want the freedom to move around and see towns, castles, museums etc as well as seeing the countryside too. Cities would certainly have a space in the tour as Prague is on the list and Dresden, Liepzig too are possibilites. One option too would be to head south towards Munich as my uncle came from Odelzhausen and seeing if there are any relatives in that area is a current investigation. Although quite a number moved back towards northern Germany after reunification. So all options are still under consideration.
