im goin to spain in august travelling from calais right through france but am unsure as to whether i should book a few sites or just turn up

my mate says he just turns up and has never had a problem but i have a twin axle and believe these are frowned upon at some sites

i do possess however the caravan club european sites guide

also how much in tolls can i expect to pay (it'll be one way with caravan) as im leaving it in spain

regards paul

We are also travelling down through France in August. Although I have booked our final site, we are just going to chance it on the way down. We've always gone in June before and don't even book our main site! This is partly because we (even after all these years) don't know where we will be when we want to stop. If you have the CC European Guide it's easy enough to ring round if the first place can't accommodate you. People come and go on sites all the time, so, as long as you get there reasonably early, you should be OK.

Hi Paul

My wife and I have been caravanning on the Continent, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, etc for 10+ years now. We always go in July/August for c5 weeks as we are both teachers.

We rarely book sites as we are never sure how far we will get/where we will want to stop. We look up sites in "Caravan Europe", "Alan Rogers"(books and recently POIs for SAT Nav) ACSI (book and DVD) and phone ahead the day before or on the day of arrival.

Only in northern Spain, ie, along from Bilbao did we find any problems as there were fewer sites, of a reasonable standard anyway - the above guides are VERY useful in terms of site quality. We haven't travelled to other parts of Spain, however. France in particular has loads of sites.

Regarding tolls. In 2008 we travelled down from Dunkerque to the French Pyrenees and back via Ile de Re towing the 'van. I reckon we spent close on
