To re-seal or not ?

As far as I'm aware there is no obvious damp in my van. However, it is 9 yrs old and am wondering if , prevention being better than cure, it would be worth getting the seals re-done by a repairer. This would be expensive (several hundred pounds I guess?).

I have been told that it is often difficult to get the trims off and re-seated without bending them and as all seems well I'd be better off having a regular damp test.

Incidentally, how accurate/useful is a damp test report? What do they actually do ?

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks , Wes

Hi Wes,

Firstly, I am a great believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", as with a lot of things, once you start messing, there is scope to make a problem where none existed before.

The removal of awning rails and cover strips can be difficult, and yes, sometimes they do get bent in the process!

A good reseal involves removing all the attached items, thoroughly cleaning off all the old mastic, applying new mastic and replacing the items on the van with stainless steel screws, a time consuming venture, which can prove expensive.

A good place to start is having a damp check done.

The report should show you if there is any damp at all, and how severe it is and in exactly which areas.

Depending on the operative, it is a very accurate test when using the proprietary tester and not one of the
