I have been told that the pink stuff makes your toilet have black slimmy stuff under the rim and to only use plain water in the top tank, which if any doesnt make black stuff because I do want the toilet to smell nice.

The pink additive not only makes black algae under the rim of the toilet, it also invades the flush tank, all the pipewoek, and will eventually block the pump and you will need a new one, as well as cleaning out the whole flushing system.
Plain water in the flush tank, no additives, especially toilet tank blocks, as they will ruin the pump also.
Just a spray dettox or similar wil keep the toilet smelling OK

Kind of makes you wonder why Thetford sell "Pink" for their toilets unless it's to increase the sale of replacement pumps.

Use Elsan double strength pink in copious amounts for years, and never had a problem..... All this nonsense about pink wreaking the loo, if that is the case why do so many manufacturers sell it....

I have no knowledge of the chemical composition of the pink flush additive, but have never had any trouble at all with any sort of Algae or black stuff or slimy stuff etc.
It certainly keeps the toilet bowl looking clean and fresh on my caravan toilet.....( its 17 years old now and still looks and smells good)
I will continue to use it in the future as it seems to work for us..... maybe the problems listed are caused by something else?

We have been using Elsan pink in our flush system for years and have never had an issue.

Is it just a particular make of pink that is causing problems?
So far Elsan has been ruled out.
What do you use paws?

I previously used Thetford pink on my last van and had the black gunge, vowed when I got this van not to use any again and used just water for a long while but eventually you do tend to get un-pleasent aroma's. So I have used the blue diamond pink and as I ran out of that am currently using Elsan pink with no problems. I do however use it at 50% of the stated dose, just enough to tinge the water.
I beleive there was a thread a long while back where members were concerned more about the Thetford product then any others.

The only time that our toilet flush has had black bits in it was when I used too much el cheapo pink flush additive.
I'm using a proprietary brand of pink flush now (could be Elsan but I can't remember offhand) but like Kev, I only use a small amount just enough to tint the water and there has been no black gunge since.

Our's takes it direct from either the onboard tank or the aqua roll, never had a problem......
Maybe some of this would work ???

Until ten years ago Thetford Pink went in the flush tank.
Loads of black algae would appear.

Now we use Elsan diamond pink and blue. No smells or algae.

So the Elsan pink musy be ok.no problem with toilet parts or blockages.

To answer the above in two parts.
First, you are obviously not a caravan engineer or you would not say what you have about it being nonsense, and why I have had to change over 100 toilet pumps over the last 4 years.

Secondly, why do they sell it,,simple,PROFIT,.

Imust add though that I should have qualified my original reply and said specifically Thetford Pink being bad for the toilet flush system, Elsan does not appear to do the same .

Don't use Pink in our loo at all as there is nowhere to put it as the flush water comes straight from the barrel. However saying that we don't use the Blue stuff either, just disinfectant in the holding tank as we only ever have wee's, for the want of a better word lol. For No. 2's we always use site toilets
I do however have a spray bottle with the diluted Pink stuff in it, Thetford, I believe, which I spray the bowl with after flushing. It's worked for years of caravanning and portapotti use.
Hope this helps

Hi Woodlands Camper, Apologies for the delay in repling.
It's the Elsan double flush Pink that we use.....we use it at the dilution recommended on the bottle, and everything is sweet, clean and fresh....
I can't remember how long exactly we have been using it, but it is donkeys years, I think...caravan is now 17 years old the toilet is the original (Thetford PPC2r) cassette, electric flush model) apart from replacing the lip seal about 4 years ago...£12.00 from local caravan shop and about 5 or 10 mins max to fit) , and no problems so far!

We haven't bought Thetford for many years as we think they have priced themselves out of the market for a product that is inferior to Elsan. We pay £9.50 for 4 litres of Elsan although recengtly we bought a load of Blue Diamond from Halfords at a good discounted price plus BOGOF.

Black gunk in your tank is basically mildew...or bacteria that has been allowed to grow.

The Pink Flush contains chemical additives that inhibit this very process.

I wouldn't use anything BUT pink flush - and we have it quite strong - 7 years on and no black bits in sight.
