Hi we have used the tag for 2 years now with van and for us its been great, yes it costs a little more as you pay a yearly fee but its not much and if you travel July/Aug its worth it for the time saved.
Regards
Maddy

Same as Maddy. Used ours for the last two years and it was great. No more hanging out of the car window for my wife to reach the booths :)
It is a bit strange the very first time you approach a toll and wonder if the barrier will open, then it does and you can settle down and enjoy the rest of your holiday. Worth the extra few quid in my opinion for the ease and speed.

Graeme.

See the thread further down in this topic SANEF Tags in which I asked much the same question and after using the tag came to much the same conclusion i.e for a small additional cost well worth it for hassle free travelling. Wish I'd done it some years ago - oh and that the French tag would be extended for use in Spain too.

While we are on the subject of Toll Tags, do you need to register each year? or will it add this to your bill the next time you use it. We used our tag for the first time last year and will be using it again this coming June. I don't want to pull up at the booth and sit wondering why the barrier will not raise.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Not sure about the renewal route but you could email the UK SANEF office - they're pretty quick to reply usually.

Just back from France and had one instance where the tag let us onto the auto-route OK but would not let us off. Used the phone provided at the barrier and had to take the tag out of the car and read all the numbers off the back of it to the operator - then all was well. However operator had no English, so you need to know your numbers in French !

Just an add-on.

Check you monthly invoices carefully and as soon as notified they are available. My second shows 42 euros for a stretch which should have been about 6. Fortunately the entry details are so obviously wrong that there should be no problem sorting it out

Further to my last posting. The tag/system seemed to think i had entered incorrectly, so charged me for the entire stretch of autoroute instead of 6 euros and ignored the fact i had returned to the same auotroute an hour later.

SANEF UK want chapter verse and colour of grandmothers eyes (I exaggerate but not by much) and now tell me the matter has been referred to France but that any credit / refund may take several months. Not at all what I had expected.

So much for the 'easier to have a tag' suggestion. Advice remains to check you invoice as soon as possible and challenge any errors immediately. You will need date and time, Autoroute section used, vehicle type reg and colour, whether you had a roof load, height of caravan, tag number etc.
The implication is clearly that you are at fault.

Good info Ray, When you say invoice how does this work?

Do I take it they debit your debit/credit card??? or do you physically pay monthly?

I was wondering how it was financed

I've had one for six or seven years now and pay with my UK credit card. I have just had a request for my new card's details as it expired in June. This is the only request you will ever have.

You get an email saying your monthly account is available and you can download it as a .pdf file. Recommend you do and save.

Amount owing is taken by variable direct debit from whichever account you have given them when setting up.

This will eventually show up - total amount not details - on the statement you get from your bank about that account.

Which is why I down load from SANEF and save print and check

I am still undecided about a Tag. Do you have any notification of how much is the cost of the distance just travelled, when going through a Toll, so that you have some form of check ?

You only know the cost if you have looked at the website first and checked it out. Single axle caravans are Class 2 whereas solo cars are Class 1. I'm not sure whether the machine displays the amount at the exit barrier as i have been concentrating on not stopping and driving out cleanly. However the SANEF site assures you that the road charges are exactly what you would pay if using the ticket and pay method.

Since my last posting SANEF have agreed my tag must be faulty and it has been replaced without undue delay.

I took the plunge and bought a Toll Tag. We have just returned from 5 weeks in France and the Tag has proved it's worth. Have checked the Invoices with Michelin, and all appears OK. Well worth it !! :)

P.S. Rouen was a nightmare again going south !!!!!!!

When you first get the tag you provide a variable Direct Debit mandate againt which the charge s are made. You get an email saying an invoice can be viewed each month when there is a charge to be paid, but not when you have not used the tag. You can also see a complete statement of your account with most recent charges shown first. Charges are shown with a minus sign.
The incorrect charge I mentioned earlier was shown as refunded in full on the overall accontn summary, but not (yet ?) on an invoice, as I have not been in France since discovering the error.
I have validated the replacement tag but not yet used it. I assume the validity will now run for a year from this validation, rather than from the start date of the original tag.
Hopefully it will get used early September en route to Provence

If you are looking to buy a toll tag can I suggest you have a look at this site
http://www.alis-sa.com/gb/offres/libertFrequence.php

The tag is usable all over France with the exception of 2 tunnels and is also accepted in a lot of Vinci car parks anywhere in europe. Before you buy one it is worthwhile checking out which route discount you wish to take as these do add up if you are a frequently traveller on the same stretch of road.

ps always keep the little bag they come in as they stop the battery from wearing down. Although you do not drive past many toll stations in the UK other devices can drain the batteries which are normally good for around 5 years.

Just back from 5 week trip to Provence and back and tag performed faultlessly at both the normal booths - we usually use those generally on right hand side intended for HGVs as they are wider, but also those marked 80 usually towards left hand side intended for cars through wich you can go at a speed up to 80 km/hr.

You may find a slight delay at either as the system has to 'look' at you and count the axles (TA vans are Class 3, SA are classe 2) and do its sums.

I shall, of course, continue to check the invoices as they appear on-line

I think it's very unlikely that there are lanes marked 80!!! This is about 50mph and there just wouldn't be enough room to stop if the barrier failed to open quickly enough. The only "drive through" lanes I've seen in France (and I live in France) are 30kph (about 18mph). Even these don't work sometimes.

I agree that they usually on the left but they are not always just for cars, I've taken my 'van through some.

Finally, I have a T/A Bailey and have never been charged Class 3, it's always Class 2.
