Could anyone help me get this POI working on my new TomTom Go 300. I have tried loading the information from both the free CD and from download on www.pocketgps.co.uk (I suspect they are the same files) The files show as loaded on the data card, but when going into manage POI's, select "Safety Camera's" no POI's are shown.I have set up all the warnings and driven over local routes where fixed have been in existance for some time....... No warning!. I must confess that I'm no computer buff, but neither am I quite stupid. Help, before I collect another 3 points for doing 36mph in a 30mph limit at 22:00hrs on a Sunday night!.

Any guidence will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Louis/Wishlist,

The bit I'm stuck on does not seem to appear on the forums I have read. I have loaded files but it's the enabling them that's stumping me. When you go to enable POI's nothing refers to Safety Cameras at all. If you then create a new catagory "Safety Cameras and try to enable it shows "no poi's shown". So somehow I'm not getting the link I require to activate them, can you possibly throw any light on this.

Many thanks

Graham

I have the Tom-tom Navigator for PDA's. I don't know if it is identical but you might need to go into "properties" and then "poi". You should get a long list of your poi's with a box next to them; these boxes need to be checked for the poi's to be seen on the map. These poi's should be labelled "pocketgps uk "

Make sure you haven't accidentally hit the "hide poi's" button too.

As I said, there may be differences in the way Navigator and 300 works, with navigator; you don't get a verbal warning as you travel. It requires another program to be downloaded (and sometimes paid for) I have "gps assist.net", which also includes a few other useful programs. If this all seems like what you have, let me know and I'll try to go into it further, unfortunately I'm not a computer buff myself but will try to do what I can.

I have just checked my TTG300 and I do 'Change Preferences', Manage POI', 'Enable/disable POI', scroll down to the ones starting 'pocketgps' and ensure that it is ticked. You then need to go to the 'Warn near POI' option, select each 'pocketgps' entry, input how far before the camera you want to be warned and then select the appropriate sound (you will need to ensure that you have the right sound for the right camera'.

If you are still having problems, the only other thing I can think of is ensuring that you have also downloaded the replacement data.chk file from pocketGPS(you will need to replace the one that is already in the root menu).

I hope this help?

Did you get this working OK in the end? I just bought the tomtom300 today, wanted to download and install, but a little nervous in case I muck up or loose some of the software? How easy was it to do? Also I can only seem to find POI for camera's that you need to buy? I thought you could get them for free, but maybe I am not looking in the correct place? Aprreciate some advice please

The first thing you should do is to back-up all the files on the TTG to your PC. You cannot rely on the program that TT supply as it will not back-up your maps - the only copy is on your SD card.

Once you're backed up, download the free database here http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/uksafetycameras.php.

Then follow the instructions on this thread to install.

Think we could be on the right track here Louis, Nothing resembling "pocketgps" appears in the POI list. If I look in Great_Britain map directory files have transferred OK. I'm confused on replacing data.chk file in the root directory........ quite simply, "How the hell do I do that?". As I said, I'm no computer buff and when it gets to things other than basics.... Help!. If you can help it will be very much appreciated. Direct Email is Gf289@aol.com

Hi Paul & Ruth, As you will see from my note to Louis I'm certainly struggling, in so far, how do you back up TTG files to your PC?. I think somehow the world of technology is passing me by!. Unfortunately I did not grow up with computers so what appear to be simple tasks, cause me immense concern and brain overtime!, taken me months (No years) just to master the video player!. Fortunately Caravans still remain pretty well technology free..... so here's to a I nice relaxing weekend, If I manage to find my site without GPS and avoid the dreaded "Yellow Boxes". Good luck Graham (Gf289@aol.com)

Thanks Louis

Having read the insructions I also now realize that we need to back up. We will do this and then try your link, can I presume all the new data is OK on the original card? I assume we are eventually going to need a bigger card and can copy the backup copy onto the new card?

To back up the SD card you need to connect the SD card to your PC. I use a card the card reader in my printer but you can connect the TTG direct to the PC using the USB lead that was supplied.

You then need to go to Windows Explorer and create a folder in My Documents called 'TomTom'. You then need to copy all of the files from the SD card to the folder that you have just created:

You then need to stay in Windows Explorer and click on the plus next to 'My Conputer'.

You will see a list of drives such as A:, C:, etc. One of the drives will be called something like 'TomTom' or 'Removable Disk' (the names may not be exact. Click on the plus next to the Removable Disk or TomTom and the right hand pane of Windows Ecplorer will show all files on the SD Card.

Hovering with your mouse over the Removable Disk/TomTom in the left hand pane, Right Click your mouse and selct 'Copy'. This will copy the entire contents of the SD card.

You then need to move your mouse to 'My Documents', 'TomTom', Right click your mouse amd select Paste. You will then get a delay of up to 30-40 secs whilst the files are copies. You should now have a back-up of the SD Card.

You can continue to use the original SD card and load on the Safety Camera Database but the point is if something gets mucked up, you can delete all the files from the SD card and copy them back to the SD card from My Documents, TomTom.

I brought a new SD card because there was very little free space on the one that TT supplied and I wanted to load many Points of Interest on. You may be able to get away without a new one but they were relatively cheap (256mb card around

Louis, Thank you so much for your help. I have now followed this and understand all the points you have made.

But the darned thing still won't work!!. I have copied over the OV2 & BMP files into the Great_Britain map directory. If you view this via the connection to my PC you can see them safely installed in the map directory and can open them OK. But go to Manage POI's, enable/disable and nothing appears in the list at all that refers to pocketgps or safety camera's, or do I need to go to Add POI and type in "pocketgps.

The only other thought I had is, is this compatable to the latest TomTomGo. Mine is Device AK8SC ASGTE, App 5000 (4111/050503) OS:723 30mb (free 2.6mb) - (OV2 & BMP loaded) Map version. Great_Britain-Map562. This does not seem to coincide with Pocketgps versions exactely.

I think I owe you a huge drink if we meet up on a site sometime in the future (I'm up at the British Grand Prix Thurs to Mon next week), also good luck to Paul and Ruth...... let me know if you succeed where I have failed.

Regards

Graham

I've just checked the TT website and you are running version 5.0 of the operating system whereas TT are now recommending 5.2 (I've just upgraded mine as it was 5.1) You can get details here:

http://www.tomtom.com/support/rightnow.php?Page=http://support-uk.tomtom.com/cgi-bin/uk.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1750
It shouldn't make any difference to the operation of the safety cameras but I must admit that I try and keep up to date with the versions.

Anyway, regarding the POIs, I did mine from scratch folowing the upgrade (this method downloads all the c:

1. Download the file from the above link

2. Unzip the file to a location

3. Navigate to the where you unzipped the file above and open the 'ov2 bmp files' folder.

4. You will see 12 files (6 bit maps and 6 OV2 files)

5. Copy all 12 files to the Great_Britain-Map folder on your TTG SD card. You must not copy the whole folder, just the files.

6. All the files should now be on you SD card

7. To enable the cameras in the TTG, select Change Preferences, Manage POIs, Enable / Disable POI

8. Scroll down the list - the first new one you come to should be the 'pocketgps ...'.

9. Tap the screen to the left of the icon to select it (you will see a red tick when it is selected)

10. Repeat steps 11 and 12 for all 6 speed camera types

11. If you want to be warned when you are near one, you need to set up a proximity alert. To do this, select Change Preferences, Manage POIs, Warn when near POIs and select the first camera type.

12. Input how far before the camera you want to be warned

13. Select the warning sound that you want to hear (default is a beep)

14. Repeat steps 11 to 13 for each of the 6 camera types.

That should now be everything sorted - when ever you go near a speed camera, you will hear a beep.

Once you've got this working, the better way is to download each of the speed camera types (Gatso 20, Gatso 30 etc) and link a spoken warning to each type so instead of beeping, the TTG says 'Gatso 20' when you are approaching a Gatso 20.

To do this, see this link -

http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-go-poi-alerts.php
This all looks a bit daunting but once you've done it once, it's fairly straight forward. The main thing is that you must back-up your SD card before you start.

I hope this helps and if any steps do not make sense, let me know and I will elaborate.

Regards

Louis

EUREKA Louis!!!, It's working. Yes, the problem was that I was just transfering OV2bmp Folder, not opening it in my PC then transfering the 6 files.......... some of us are just to dumb to be let anywhere near modern technology!, but when some kind soul like yourself takes immense trouble to explain in detail, "All becomes obvious". Thank you so much for all the time and trouble you took, it is really appreciated. Good luck to Ruth & Paul, you can't go wrong now!!.

Again Many thanks
