I thought that insurance companies always sent out an assessor to view the damage. If not, they need a report from the body shop and they do check or used to check previously. Considering that insurance is a multi million or billion industry, there is not excuse for them not doing proper checks.

Yep and the blame is squarely with insurance company and no one else.
When someone backed into our Kia I saw it happen. Even though damage appeared very slight I photographed it ado time and location were shown. I also photographed her car, again light damage. Her insurance took over the claim and the car went to their Kia approved repair shop. But before that I had to send lots of pictures to the repair shop. Glad I did claim as the actual damage was far more substantial than first thought.

Agreed 100%. We are paying the price for insurers trying to cut corners motivated by profit and shareholders. Sadly some of the shareholders are probably our pension funds so we get back some of our own money!
