Just been for a shortish trip down the motorway and the car outside temperature reading was 29 deg C. Also when I turned on the Tom Tom a message flashed up saying the unit was too hot and the battery charging was inhibited. First time I've seen that. How do people fair abroad?

Ten years ago we had a Rover 75 estate which had a BMW DVD based in-built sat nav. The DVD drive was located in the rear offside corner of the boot area, just inside the metal wing. We were on holiday, intending to travel to the Med, and had an overnight stop near Clermont-Ferrand. The overnight temperature was in the upper 20's. On the morning when we were due to leave, we hitched up and I was going to input the next destination into the sat nav, but the sat nav option had disappeared off the screen!

Resorting to the good old map (after a few expletives about modern technology!), we set off in temperatures like you describe.

After a couple of hours, we stopped for a drink, and upon returning to the car, the sat nav option had come back.

Before we left that morning, the sun had been beating down on the offside of the car, and obviously all the windows/doors had been closed. The car was stinking hot inside when we first got in, so we had the air con on full belt for that run.

All I could think was that the unit had overheated and shut down (like yours), and having the air con on had cooled it sufficiently to re-boot it.

It was the one and only time that it happened.
