Torque wrench setting for towbar bolts

Im going to replace the bumper protection plate on the towball cos its a rusty mess(new nuts and bolts as well).Does anyone know what the torque wrench setting is for the two mounting bolts,and what size socket is needed ?

Hello, can't tell you the torque setting ,but the socket size is 24m/m or 15/16 in old money. One of the few old A/F sizes that will fit with no problems.

OOPs,,sorry, the bolts are M16, which are 16mm shank, the head is 24mm

Hi Tricky, as stated I'm sure the bolts are 24mm and as far as torque is concerned, usually FT (Flipping tight) or other words beginning with F, if you're young then my bolts needed to be done up to 214nm or if if you're past it (joke) and like old money then it's around 158lb

Damian forgive me for questioning your superiority, but the main 16mm bolts should be torqued higher than 88nm that you state, I'm not a tow bar fitter but I've fitted quite a few towbars now and never seen torque settings that low

Make sure you get HT (High tensile) bolts, and dont forget to use spring washers or nyloc nuts. If using nyloc nuts, make sure the thread protrudes all the way throuch the nut when fastened.

Mike, I am in no way superior.

The torque figure I gave was the Al-Ko recommended figure which , as an Al-Ko Service Center I abide by.

Having had time to research other towing accessories sites and t5ech info, I must add a very important rider.

It would seem that different manufacturers use different torque figures, so it is best to go by your own particular makers recommendation.

Figures vary from 58nm to 210nm, with an average of 165nm
