We did a similar trip back in 1994. That's quite a while back so I don't know whether I can be of any great help but as no one else has replied, I thought I'd add what I can. We started in Vancouver (a lovely city) and spent the first night, if I remember correctly, in a place called Hope. From there we travelled via Kamloops on to Banff and Jasper. Don't miss a trip on the monster all-wheel drive bus over the Columbia Icefields! Then on to Calgary and down the Rockies through Montana, Idaho, etc. We got as far as the Grand Canyon in Arizona before heading for the coast in L.A. and then returning to Vancouver mainly along the coast (not missing San Francisco). It was a big trip but we managed it reasonably comfortably in 5 weeks. All along we used the KOA Campground Guide (have a look at http://www.koakampgrounds.com/). Other than in state and national parks, full hookups are the rule rather than the exception. The campground services in these parks can be rather rudimentary but, to compensate, you're right in the middle of wonderful nature.
