tow bar for BMW

We have just brought a BMW 530D Sport(2002) we are having trouble finding anyone to fit a tow bar,we live in Hampshire, does any one know where we can get one fitted, other than a BMW dealer.

Catherine

Hi, not sure where you can get one from in your area, but I had a Bosal detachable fitted to my 530d Tourer and it cost

Hi Catherine,

We went to a local independent tow bar fitter - who our local Mercedes dealer uses anyway and they were happy to recommended them to us.

Saved a considerable sum of money, and they did a perfect job fitting a Brink detachable.

Bosal and Brink are the two premium German tow bar manufacturers, both are supplied to the Mercedes and BMW factories as original fit equipment.

So try speaking with your BMW dealership - and ask for a recommendation for a local tow bar fitter. Failing that - towsure is in Southampton - and ask them.

At the same time, since you mentioned you had the Sport model (with lowered suspension?) get them to check if a different tow ball head is required - to comply with 94/20/EC (tow bar type approval) the tow ball head must be a certain distance above the ground - so if the suspension was lowered you may need a different tow arm.

Brink is not German. Brink is Dutch and a subsidiary of US based Advanced Accessory Systems LLC (unless they have been taken over by Thule in the meantime - there was talk about it).

Lutz,

Thanks. A slight error by me - no excuse - I work in Rotterdam and knew that all along - but just let the typing get ahead of me.

Groetjes / Vielen Dank - Robert

Hi Rob Went to Towsure they said they can't do our model of BMW.I dont think hubby was to keen on having the bumper cut on his new car! but from what Graeme says he might have to. We have looked at Witter detachable tow bars on the net with a view of doing it himself unless we can find another place near Portsmouth.

Hi Catherine,

Witter is a good UK make, but doesn't seem to have the range in depth of the Europeans.

I really think you'll have more chance of finding a Bosal tow bar to fit exactly, then Brink and Westfalia. One or more of those companies supplies the factory fit.

Shame about Towsure - so try the NTTA at http://www.ntta.co.uk/ - this is the trade association - and they have lists of approved fitters and mobiles.

It's still worth speaking with the dealership and find out who they use.
