Tow car. Please recommend

Hi all,

I have decided to change my 53 plate Mondeo 2.0 TDCI for something a bit meatier. It would be great if I could get some advise from the experts. I'm not too fussy but I would like to avoid Landrover due to bad experiences with head gaskets.

A low P/X deal would be ok but a swap would be better for my car. I've been looking at some 02/03 plate Fronterers with the 2.2 engine. These seem to be favourable as there seems to be plenty around. Engine size can be as big as it likes as long as it's not over 3.0.

I've also looked at the Citroen C5 but the max tow weight on these doesnt't look too cleaver. My van is Mass running order 1224kg and Max Total Permitted Laden Mass 1442 Kg. The Mondeo tows well but not as comfortable as I'd like. We also seem to end up on fields where I always get stuck so 4X4 I think.

Auto trader gives me figures of around £5k for mine so thats the sort of price I'd be looking at.

Many thanks for your help.

Regards

Gary

Just had a quick look at the weights on the HYUNDAI Santa Fe 2.4 and cuddles says the Max tow weight for this model is ink 1400.

This can't be right can it?

Ta again

Hello Gary,

Third party sites like cuddles are great for geting a feel for a match, but you must never rely on information from them as being gospel. Always check with the dealer or manufacturer.

According to the data I have, the 2.4 Santa Fe has a towload limit of 1650kg. All other models are rated at 2300kg.

Gary, we have just (reluctantly) changed our Mondeo as we too needed a bit more kerbweight to be comfortable with our van and load.

After much searching we ended up with a Nissan Terrano. Cant vouch for its qualities yet as we dont get it till Thursday but it will certainly give you more towing capability than the Mondeo. There will be plenty of nice examples around for your budget.

Advice from this forum tells you to avoid the auto models however due to overheating problems when towing.

Good luck, Martin.

The Frontera 2.2 is a very capable tow car, we had one for 3 years and it was excellent. However I would recommend the 2. diesel, prior to this we had a 2.2 petrol (same model) and found it thirsty and whilst a capable tow the engine was now where as near refined as the diesel and required a lot of gear changing when towing.

Personally i would be inclined to pay a bit extra and look for a network Q car.
