About to buy my first caravan, a Swift Challenger 480 se 1282 MTPLM and now need to choose a suitable tow car, about 2010 model. Any recommendations for said vehicle, would be more than welcome.

My caravan has a MTPLM of 1,230kg and tow it with a Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0TDi 4x4, (2011-12 model) mass in service (V5C) 1,495kg. Lots of load space in the back, torque and power is very good, mpg towing around 33-36 depending on roads, good on muddy fields.

You could tow that weight with a medium sized family car, eg 1.7 Astra as I do. No need for a 4x4. ;) My Astra has a max tow weight of 1300 kg.

Most cars the size of an Astra or Focus should manage it. I would want a kerb weight of at least 1400 kg if you are new to towing and check the manufacturers towing limit as one or two variations might not be up to it.
Diesels are best for towing with lots of low down torque but a decent sized petrol engine should be OK.
If you prefer a Mondeo sized car would be even better as generally the heavier the tow car the more stable the outfit.

and normally they come with a bigger boot volume, which can be handy given how much people try to take away with them on their holidays
