tow car

we are about to take delivery of a new bailey senetor wyoming and hoped we could get some advise about what would be the best towing vechile. obviously it needs to be a 4x4 but which one is best?

It doesn't have to be a 4x4. There are quite a number of cars capable of towing the 1714kg MTPLM of the Wyoming.

Nice van Adrian, thats our dream van! (we have a bailey but would love to upgrade one day)

We have a freelander TD4 2.0 and thought we wouldnt be able to tow a wyoming but did notice a freelander on the motorway towing one at the weekend.

if I had pots of cash, id pick the Discovery 3 to pull my dream van 🙂

What cars do you suggest - most caravan dealers have told us the only thing that will tow safely is a 4 x 4

Hi

We have a Senator Wyoming - it's a brilliant van and I hope you enjoy it.

We now have two tow cars the Grand Voyager (an MPV not a 4x4) which although a heavy car has a towing limit of 1600 Kgs - the Wyoming's MTLM is a tad over 1700 Kgs.

We have previously towed the van with the Voyager but made sure that it was within the 1600 Kgs - it is usually just the two of us that go away and we put some of the heavier items in the car.

We have now just bought a new Kia Sorento and as I am working away from home just now in Dublin we have not been away in the van but a few weeks ago we took the van to the dealer for some minor warranty work (watch the locks on the fridge door!!).

Anyway the dealer is about a 40 mile round trip but this is a mix of roads - motorway, A roads and a long steady climb up a hill with a few bends in it.

We keep most things that we need in the caravan all the time so the only difference between the van when we were taking it to the dealer and when we go away was clothes and foodstuffs (but we tend to shop and eat out locally when we are away so we don't take much of that).

Anyway I was really impressed with the Sorento and I would recommend that you have a look at one. There was

Most except the smallest BMW 5 Series, Merc E Class, Audi A6 or something comparable would be just as suitable.

Hi,

I tow a twin axle Bailey Senator Montanna which is about the same weight as your van with a Volvo V70 Diesel.

It tows well even up hills in 5th Gear.

So like another reader said you dont have to have a big 4x4 any of the big estate cars will do.

Happy caravanning

David

The new VW Passat diesels weigh in at around 1750kgs and have a max tow of 1800kgs (12% incline) and 2000kgs (8% incline), so as the others have said, don't necessarily dismiss some larger estate cars.

Hi Trudy, We have just got a series 5 Wyoming and tow it with a Hyundai Terracan, low insurance, a 5 year warranty and reasonable fuel consumption [for a 4x4]. It weighs 2265 kg, so is well within the 85% GUIDELINE.It tows fantastic and solo is very comfortable. We looked at the Kia Sorento, which we liked very much but the Terracan has a bigger boot and I carry a lot of gear [we rally]. I had a snake many years ago when some idiot overtook me speeding in a high sided van on a down hill in high winds. It was a terrifying experience. Although I think the twin axles tow better, its a hell of a lot of weight behind you if it starts misbehaving. You will love the van, we have used it every weekend since we have had it, its a dream. Hi, we have a diesel 1.9 passat 130BHP three years old and log book kerbweight is stated at 1499 so we are thinking of changing it to tow our new van mtplm1450, so your weights look a bit heavy to me.

I have just taken delivery of a Mercedes Viano 3:0 lt diesel. i have had it one week and have done 2000km half with caravan kerb wight 2195 kg exellent towcar

Mel we have ordered a new Viano Diesel 2.2 Diesel. How did you get a 3 litre model? If this option is available as a special order we have not found it and would be interested in where it is available!
