Tow Hitch Noise

My friend who came away withn at the weekend has a caravan with a blue stabiliser hitch, similar set up as a Alko, i think its a 'Winterhoff'. When he tows its makes an awful screaching noise, we asked a caravan shop while we were away what they thought and they said the tow ball and inside the hitch needs cleaning with emerey paper, which we did but when towing home it still made the same sound. The guy in the shop said that the pads would need replacing, does anyone have any experience of this?

How much should it cost to have the pads replaced?

Thanks

Anthony

Providing there is no paint (black!) on the towball, I would recommend that he buys a can of brake-cleaner (Halfords)and sprays/cleans both the ball and the pads thoroughly with it. If it still makes a noise after that, there is a good chance that the pads are contaminated, and would need replacing.I don't know the cost of the pads for the blue Winterhoff stabiliser, but I can't imagine they would be very expensive.
