Towcar change

Hi All

I have towed my Bailey 2007 460/4 with my 2005 Citroen Picasso 1.6 petrol for the last 2 years but the match for the two was 95% not good the noseweight 80kg ok.

The car did struggle just a bit on steep hills and on motorways could never get in to 5th gear for any length of time. Also had to use the gear box well. So I looked around for a good tow car. The Bailey needs a 82kg noseweight and its MTPLM is 1184kg. I know I am going to get comments about 4x4 BUT we went for a 2005 Landrover Freelander TD4 auto. What a difference it tows so well you do not now the caravan is there. Its a 2 litre just and does seem to do very well on fuel. The insurance is cheaper than the picasso by £3.00 the Road tax £210 Citroen was £170. All in all so far I am very pleased with the change and looking forward to the coming holidays.

Hi to all,we have just changed our car and caravan in the last month.We have bought a Bailey Limousin and a Nissan Pathfinder 2'5dci. I am getting 39.4 mpg driving solo (at 62mph) and 23.7mpg towing the caravan !!

I am having it chipped to increase the torque and hopefully the mpg.I had it done on my last car a volvo s60 to very good effect.The Chip was supplied by Car Performance via thierebay site for

Hi Stephen,

Engine chipping is fitting some additional device to the Engine Management System, that either changes the outputs from various sensors on the engine to fool the control system into changing the way fuel is injected into the cylinders, or it actually re writes some or all of the control programs within the Electronic control Unit.

Some can be fitted in minutes by a competent DIYer,

others may require trained fitters and specialist test gear.

In most cases the systems are designed to produce more power, or to change the torque curve of the engine. In some cases but not all it will change the economy of the engine.

Some car manufactures offer a towing pack, and that might include a factory-approved chip or modification.

Beware though:

In some cases fitting a none approved chip can invalidate your warranty.

It is also seen as a modification and you must inform your insurers accordingly

It might damage or overstress certain parts of your engine.

Fuel economy can go up or down depending on the chip and your driving style.

Some are quite expensive.
