Towcars ?

Hello all

We are having to get rid of our Volvo 850 which we use to tow our Elddis Shamal XL and are looking to replace it. Can anyone give me advice on a good towcar, budget about £8k ? No preferences.

Preferably diesel as it will be used as a general car as well.

Was thinking maybe Skoda Octavia ? Any comments ?

Thanks

Stuart

Hi Stuart, I have used an Octavia 1.9tdi estate for the last two years to tow 900kgs Monza and 1156kgs Bailey Discovery, very happy with car 38-40mpg towing, 55-60mpg solo, very reliable. Kerbweight 1430kgs gives 85% guide at 1200kgs approx, max tow 1300kgs, the only downside I have found is relatively low noseweight of 60kgs means some juggling of the loading is necessary. Go for t/drive, I'm sure you won't be disappointed, Ian

I purchased a Skoda Octavia L & K 1.9 TDi 130bhp 5 door hatchback last year and have found it to be an excellent tow car. Its performance with the caravan in tow is amazing. I would certainly recommend it.

Have you considered the Citroen C5?. Lots of extras for the money. You'll pick one up fairly cheap second hand. Even a new one isnt too pricey. Go for the 6 speed 2.2 Diesel.

I towed (2003 Bailey Ranger 500/5) with an Octavia 110 Elegance, good towcar at 1405Kgs kerbweight with max tow of 1300Kgs, only downside low noseweight of 60kgs. Currently tow with a 2004 Mondeo 130 TDCI. Even better stability, slightly worse fuel economy. ONly downside is slightly numb clutch at the biting point. Hope this helps.
