towing a caravan through the lake district

hello, were planning a 3 week holiday in cumbria and i wondered if anyone could give me any tips and clues of what routes to avoid whilst towing, im particulary interested in steep climbs etc, i have heard that the section between keswick and hawkshead is quite a climb, any input would be greatly appreciated!!

hello julie,..you must avoid Kirkstone Pass at all costs,.it is on the A592 between Ullswater and Windermere and it is called the Struggle for a good reason,don,t even think of tackling it towing a caravan

Where are you going in the lake district and from where? The A66 across from Penrith is mostly a good road. If you are going near Keswick, I would get off the M6 at Penrith and take the A66 across, its much quicker than driving up through Windermere and Ambleside.

Not quite true. The 'Struggle, is from the top of Kirkstone pass down into Ambleside. Caravans are banned from all approaches to the Kirkstone Pass. Most of the severest roads have signs banning caravans, if they don't it is often because there is a site along there length. We live in Cumbria and have towed alomng most of the route through the centre and periphery of the county.
