Towing a folding caravan

Hi folks,

Probably a stupid question. We have always had a fixed body caravan , but have now just bought a folding one, less wind resistance and better fuel economy etc.

I have used with the fixed body caravan a stabiliser, should I do the same with a folding caravan which has a body length of 11 feet.

I assume that its not needed as it only half the height of a fixed bodied caravan, so very much like towing a trailer. My tow car is a SWB Terrano, so nice and stable.

Any thoughts welcome and much appreciated.

Ian.

Stabilisers should never be used to control unbalanced outfits, only as an extra safeguard - so it wouldn't hurt to be fitted with your folder for peace of mind.

If it's easy to fit then do it, otherwise don't lose any sleep.

Thanks RogerL, I agree with all you have said and never used a caravan that the car was not master of.

Just wondered if it was worth fitting one with this folder. I have not yet collected the folder, so will take the stabiliser with me just in case, as you say can soon be fitted and better safe than sorry.

Regards,

Ian.

I tow a 550Kg folder with a Vitara 5 door, so sort of similar to yours, no stabiliser, and have not encountered any problems.

Only ensure you carry the spare wheel in the car, not the Van!

Thanks Chris, but will take my stabiliser with us just in case when we go to collect later this week.

I used to have a Grand Vitra, nice car.

If you already have the stabiliser, why not use it? It won't cost you anything and, regardless of whether you need it less with a folder, at least it is an added safegard.
