Towing ball with ALKO

Picked up my new to m,e caravan Sunday but had a small problem with hooking up.

On the van is a ALKO coupling, on my truck 4x4 is a big spare wheel on the back door.

We could just not get the ALKO red handle to clear the wheel.

In the end I removed the spare.

When I got home I found that I can higher the spare wheel by one inch, so all was fine, can now hook up easily to the van, problem solved.

Now my Pat is not that tall and she tells me that the spare wheel stops some of her vision in the rear mirror now it has been moved one inch up.

So like a fall suggested I can get a spacer that sets the tow ball out one inch, forgetting how heavy the spare is.

Now what shall i do, change the wheel down and fit the spacer or buy Pat a cushion to sit on.

And after all this the spacer may not give me room to hook on.

You've got a fourth option: the retro-fit AlKo stabiliser handle specially made for 4x4's with spare wheel mounted on the rear door.

Do not fit a spacer unless the towbar manufacturer allows a spacer to be fitted. If he does, he will also specify the maximum permissible thickness of the spacer.

Hi Reg & Pat,

You can remove the (red) handle & retro-fit an alko adapter handle which is made for vehicles with a rear mounted spare wheel. You can buy them from Towsure. (part number AKS50).

Reg/Pat

You can change the coupling to a Winterhoff WS 3000 it might seem a bit extreem but there is more room to hitch up, i put one of these on our van to make it easy to couple up to the wifes Disco.

Or you could try one of these.... Al-Ko 4x4 stabiliser handle
