I may be replying to this too late. However, it may be of benefit. We began caravanning around 3 1/2 years ago having never towed. I'm a confident driver but wanted just what you described as a "towing for idiots" course. At the time I was a member of the caravan club and signed up for their 1.5-day course.
The course was ok. However, the time spent physically practicing towing was a lot less than I expected. The theory and hitching on and off was also helpful. I just didn't feel I got enough time driving. The instructors were excellent though.
A short time later we began towing and i still felt that I wanted more hands-on instruction. I later paid for 4 hours 1:1 towing tuition through a trailer/ HGV company which was spent practicing various towing manoveres. As it was 1:1 it proved to be very valuable.
This combined with the caravan club course proved to be the best path for me. Several months later we got the opportunity to store and stay on our favourite site so I no longer need to tow. However, when this changes I will probably do a short refresher as in my view training and practice have proven a valuable tool to have.
