What model number and year is the Compass caravan?
Unfortunately I can't find any details of a 1.6 Cougar but the vehicle handbook will show the towing limits.

From the information that you have given your vehicle kerbeight is 1291kg and an 85% recommended safe towing figure for this vehicle is 1097kg (1291 divided by 100 then multiply that figure by 85)
The data for a 2004 Compass Corona 362 suggests a miro (Mass in Running Order) of 881kg which means that unless there are any manufacturers towing limits the combination should be fine.
Enjoy your trip to the UK and keep in touch to let us know how you are doing

Thanks for info, our van is a compass corona 482. The advice pages are very helpful for newbies like us.

For the 2004 482 2 berth model the mass in running order is shown as 1020 kg and the MTPLM ( Maximum Towable Permissable Laden Mass - in other words the most that your caravan can legally weigh) is given as 1225 kg.
This means that you will be towing over the safe recommended 85% so you will need to consider very carefully what you carry in the caravan. The habitation equipment which is not included in your MIRO comprises of lpg gas cylinder(s) spare wheel, battery, awning, water containers before you even begint to think about crockery, clothing, bedding, towels etc. and your maximum payload is 205 kg.
You need to think about how much payload you can put into the car and how it will perform with such a load.
