Just need a few pointers on towing around Paris . We need to get from Euro Disney A4 East of Paris around to Caen ,via the A13.

Q Whats it like from the Junction of A4 around to the A13 exit , is it well signposted etc . We will have friends with us who have not towed in France before , so do not want to loose them in my mirrors . Can we avoid the ring road , especially as its going to be a Friday around mid morning .

Thanks

HI , Most avoid the peripherique and go miles out of their way,I always use it and have never had a problem, just make a note of the junctions leading up to your exit and stay in the nearside lane. You will have no problem it is very well signposted especially if you plan ahead.Avoid peak commuter times and you will have no problems.

Personally, having driven on the peripherique solo many times, I absolutely wouldn't recommend it to newcomers who are towing. The road is an inner ring road, with lots of entries and exits with little distance between, and traffic trying to get on and off with very short slip roads. As a consquence they're trying to push into the lanes to get on, and push out to get off - in YOUR path! They do it at speed, and without regard to the fact that you're towing and can't stop on a sixpence. Like others, we'd go 'out of our way' to avoid it.

You can have a look at the 'real-time' traffic cameras on the peripherique on a Friday mid-morning, and see what you're likely to be facing, then bear in mind that you're driving on 'the wrong-side' with more limited visibility, and possibly a nervous passenger trying to see whether you can change lanes or not.

Have a look at a good detailed road atlas, and work out some other way of doing it, is my suggestion!

It's not as direct as the peripherique but have a look at:

A4 - A86 - N12 - A12 - A13

might be a bit less scary.

I think I am with Val on this one, just can't see the sense. Having been driven on the road at different times of the day it always seems busy regarless of the time. Don't cars coming onto the Peripherique have priority, which could be very confusing to newcomers.

Thanks all , will avoid and look at this rte , the old google map man seems to cover this area , so might take the virtual drive as a dummy run , can remember some landmarks and sign posts.

The Peripherique is best avoided when towing. You will need to change lanes and often you will be under pressure when it is necessary - not easy with a caravan on the back. Much of the road is in cuttings or underground and Satnav will be patchy at best. You can guarantee it will loose track when you need it most.

Leave the A4 on the N186 in the direction of 'Orly' This will become the A 86 and you will see signs for 'Rouen'. Follow the 'Rouen' signs via the A12 to the junction with the A13.

A word of caution, the exit for the A13 is from the outside (left) lane of the A12, so think about moving across on the long open straight after emerging from the long underpass on the A12. It is not as bad as it sounds but it is best not left to the last moment. Good luck.

If you use the Perepherique you never need to change lane and it is'nt a problem.

There is a myth that it is difficult it is in fact no different to any other road just find out what exit(sortie) you want stay in the nearside lane (no need to change) and when you get to the exit leave it.

Thanks for the tip on A12 / A13 split . Have spent time doing the virtual journey via google map man . The A86 it is . Just hope the good old M25 behaves tomorrow night as our 2 van mini convoy heads south . Rgds Pip

The Plotter - I had the misfortune to use this route and had to change lanes many times, due to roadworks, accidents, and French lemmings throwing their Peugeots and Renaults at me, my family and my outfit! On the way back North I took such a wide berth around Paris I nearly got my feet wet!!

Many years ago, I had to drive around this road with a broken clutch cable on a Peugeot 305, now that was stress full. I didn't dare come off, because I only knew the one route and had nobody to navigate. I got all the way back home, before I could get it fixed. I should add that it was a public holiday and no garages were open for repairs.
