towing steep bank

hi to everyone iam going to a cl site near the hole of holcrum on the A169 between A171 whitby rd and the A170 at pickering there is a bank called saltergate bank which has hair pin bend then a steep incline, wondered if anyone has towed up it, there is other routes but this is the shortest

I towed a 26 foot twin axle up it on the way to Whitby last year. It did slow us down a bit but not as much as some of the other traffic. The hairpin means you can't carry any speed up the hill so you have to start at the bottom in 2nd. But it was not to bad I think by the time i reached the top I was back up to 50mph. Just take your time and select a low gear and you will be fine. I also recall it was quite straight so if there are any speed merchants they should be able to overtake.

Thanks Mike Mc for reply but might be on the wrong road, travel on A171 towards Whitby past Scaling Dam come to roundabout turn right onto A169 up blue bank (NOT TO BAD) across moors then you come to Saltegate Bank

i towed on that road a couple of times many years ago. my set up was a saab 900 and a swift conqueror 520.

there are a few stretches which made the saab work a bit, but nothing to get upset about.

i remember using 2nd and 3rd gear a bit but im pretty sure from memory that i kept up a pretty decent speed without any heartache.

Hi

We live near whitby and do this route regularly with a large twin axle behind our front wheel drive Ford s-max going up Blue Bank and Saltersgate Bank with no problems, drop down the gears in good time before the engine labours and keep the speed and revs up.

thanks for all replys . still pretty new to caravaning only 3seasons under me belt and still get a bit worried about steep banks,thinking what if i dont make it to the top,her indoors reckons i worry to much and should yust go for it my rig is a audi A4 TD1 130 BHP

not sure about going up the bank but i remember seeing a sign saying caravans are banned from going down it,there is a diversion route

like i said im not sure about this i could be wrong

think you might be thinking of sutton bank where caravans are banned and there is a caravan advisory route i could use that route it would take a little longer and when you go through ampleforth the road is very narrow and they tend to p

park both sides of the road making it atight squeeze
